Challenges of a Hemophiliac
How has Hemophilia affected your daily life?
For the most part it doesn’t change his daily life. About twice a year is will affect his life in a bad way.
And in the long run?
Negative - Hasn’t been able to play sports threw school, can’t join the military, have a little arthritis in right ankle
Positive – Gone to Hemophiliac events, made new friends through those events that wouldn’t have been made otherwise.
When did you realize you had it?
When he had to go to school on crutches for mundane things that most children would be fine after. Around 8 years old. Would have to get shots occasionally and go to summer camp with other children with the same problems.
What were some difficulties as a child with Hemophilia?
He had complications with circumcision, busted his philtrum at a very young age and had to go to the hospital to get stiches. He bled a butt load of blood when he would lose teeth, which was obviously very painful and annoying.
Which type of Hemophilia do you have?
There are 2 different types, A and B, and 3 different severities, mild, moderate, and severe. Jacob and his brother both have type A and moderate severity. His sister doesn’t have Hemophilia but she could be a carrier, they don’t know if she is though because it’s difficult to find out before she has any kids.
Have you had to overcome any challenges because of Hemophilia?
He had to have surgery on right ankle at the age of 13. Had to learn to self-infuse (give himself an IV) around 8 years old and has been able to do it himself since then.
Do you have any stories with Hemophilia?
I was 5 and I was ridding my bike really fast on the sidewalk and my neighbors had left their trash out so I tried to go around it but my front wheel caught on the trash and turned my handle bars sideways. My stomach slammed into the handle bars and I flipped over my bike onto the ground. Being 5 I of course was laying there crying for my parents and they
