    Nordstrom vs. Macy's

Historically speaking, Canada has never been a great market for American retailers. The Canadian dollar was weak, costs were higher, and with limited real estate development, it was difficult to find space. Not anymore, now the door to Canada is opening wider than ever thanks to a stronger Canadian dollar, a relatively robust economy, and a loosening of the commercial real estate market, in part because of the downsizing of some longtime retailers like Sears Canada. For American retailers, Canada’s allure is simple; sales per square foot at Canadian malls were almost 50 percent higher in 2011 than sales per square foot at American malls. This is a budding market that Nordstrom will need to act towards if they hope to keep up with the competition in the future.…

Marissa Mayer is a woman who takes risks and that is why she is where she is. Her biggest risk was working on Google, which was also her biggest achievement. When she received an offer from Google, it wasn’t the great company it is nowadays, it was only a starting project, which Marissa gave a 2% chance of succeeding, but she thought it was the right decision to take the job (and it definitely was) so she turned into one of the company’s first twenty employees and its first female engineer. Google succeeded and so did Marissa Mayer: she learnt a lot from being part of the process of building a company and all the knowledge she acquired where only the starting of the path to becoming the youngest woman (she was only 33) to be part of Fortune magazine’s…

    Carly Fiorina

Carly Fiorina lead a Fortune 20 company and was actually the first woman to do this. This ranking was based on the importance of a woman’s work in the global environment, her influence in the company, arc of her career and her influence on mass culture and society. Quickly rising through the ranks of AT&T and Lucent Technologies, Carly Fiorina became one of the most powerful businesswomen in the United States. She was the group president of Global Service Provider business at Lucent Technologies Inc and was Mr Rich McGinn’s choice to be the executive vice president of corporate operations of the company. She had excellent sales skills and an ability to build consensus. She would take a lot of risks. Carly Fiorina was known for being “comfortable in uncomfortable situations”. (Ancona et. al.14-28) She used the opportunity in AT & T and jumped to the Network Systems group and did amazingly well there. This was all because she was able to recognize the telephone equipment manufacturing business unit’s potential for a growth in the markets. She added a personal touch that inspired intense loyalty among followers. She would praise the employees who achieved big contracts publicly by giving flowers and balloons. This was not confined to business; she even helped sick family members of the Lucent Technologies employees get emotional support, medical advice and doctors on time. (Ancona et. al. 14-28) She had a savvy approach to customers and there were instances when she achieved daring goals in a time span less than the targeted ones (Ancona et. al. 14-28). In order to initiate a transformation in HP, someone was required. (Ancona et. al. 14-29) So the executive-search committee established a set of criteria and she fulfilled four of them already which included an ability to formulate and communicate broad strategies, a deep knowledge of operations, a talent for creating a sense of urgency around change, ability to…

The news article follows my stock corporation, Under Armour (UA). A few weeks ago, NBA player Stephen Curry, won the NBA MVP award of 2016. Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, has an endorsement deal with Under Armour. Thus, this recent news has caused some competition between Under Armour and Nike. Nike shares closed up 0.8% in the stock market today and Under Armour added 1%. Nike is known to be a top developer, distributor, and marketer for apparel and accessories for all ages. Under Armour also similarly the same. Since the Curry award, Under Armour, a once smaller competitor, is now looking to be a top competitor thanks to Curry. Others speculate that this small difference is not permanent. That it is nothing to be worried…

The above ratios can be used to measure the efficiency of a firm’s investment policy. Burberry has a higher land, buildings and equipment to sales ratio as well as a higher depreciation to sales ratio. The higher the ratio of land, buildings and equipment to sales, the smaller the investment required to generate sales revenue and therefore the higher the profitability of the firm. Moreover, the ratio of depreciation to sales provides a measure of the level of non-cash expenditure in relation to total sales. Consequently, Burberry appears to be relatively more efficient in managing its assets in relation to the revenue generated than H&M.…
