In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby, it demonstrates what the “American Dream” was in the 1920’s. That was what the modern person wanted back then; the “American Dream”. Back then and today, the modern person is always changing. People will always want more and will want to improve further and further. In today’s society, the modern person wants popularity, success, and the newest technology.
Popularity is one of the most important things a person wants. In Ann Trafton’s article When Good People Do Bad Things she says “When people are in a group, the feel more anonymous, and less likely to be caught doing something wrong”(Trafton). For example, “Cikara, who is now an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University, started this research project after experiencing the consequences of ‘mob mentality’...”(Trafton). Cikara found real evidence about how people act differently when around other people. She was successful in her findings as a modern person. In a short story by Tim O’Brien, Ambush, he explains why he wrote about war stories that made him successful. For example, “when she was nine, my daughter Kathleen asked if I had ever killed anyone… ‘you keep writing these war stories,’ she said, ‘so I guess you must’ve killed somebody.’... I want to tell her exactly what happened, or what i remember happening, and then I want to say to her that as a little girl she was absolutely right”(O’Brien). Some people are successful because they study for years. Some are successful because of past experiences. People are successful for all different sorts of reasons, but the modern person has a desire for success. Most cannot be successful all on their own though.
