The Odyssey is one of the most famous ancient Greek epic poems written by Homer. It tells an adventure and struggle of the main character, Odysseus, trying to get back home to Ithaca from Troy. In this epic, Homer portrays Odysseus as a hero. However, in my opinion, he is not a hero because he received too much help from the Gods, did not protect his men, and was selfish at times.…

While Odysseus is an epic hero there are a few things about him that are not so heroic; such as his loyalty to his wife. He enjoys a luxurious life with Calypso all while Penelope, his wife, fights off suitors in order to remain loyal to Odysseus. While he does want to return home, he also admits that not even his wife can compare to Calypso.…

The themes of this epic: are boy must struggle to become a man, soldier must struggle to get home from war, and king must struggle to reclaim a kingdom. In this epic story, there are many characters that show loyalty to Odysseus his friends, family, servants, and even his old dog Argos. They are all loyal but I believe the most loyal was Penelope, she was very smart and tricked the suitors long enough to the powerful Odysseus was able to return home to his beloved wife. When he arrived from home she told him “I armed myself long ago against the frauds of men, imposters who might come- and all those many whose underhanded ways bring evil on”. She stood up to all of those suitors when her husband wasn’t there when they could have controlled her but yet she stayed loyal and tricked the many suitors in this is the strongest point of loyalty in this epic poem.…

The Odyssey is the epic that has been read time and time again, by varying ages, digging its way into our hearts, becoming an instant classic. Odysseus and the adventures of his homecoming create a much different tale than Homer’s other work, the Iliad, provided. The epic is not about bloodthirsty men trying to get their hands on kleos anymore; it is about the homecoming of a man who uses his wits, not his weapon. In the Odyssey, the characters balance – Homer provides contrasting characters to show the readers the traits that Odysseus holds and how it builds his character development and even those who are foils to him. Odysseus’ own son, Trojan War companions, and wife create the man that is called Odysseus, highlighting the various facets of his personality throughout the epic.…

    Greek Architecture in Egypt

The Greek style is noted for the repose, harmony, and proportion of its effect. These are terms we might use in speaking of a painting, but they relate to the composition of a building which is, in many respects, similar to the composition of a picture. In selecting his materials, and style, and site, and in arranging his masses of stones; in placing the lights and shades, and in producing an effect of symmetry and balance, the architect is doing much the same things that a painter does in composing his pictures. As to proportion, we may say, in a general way, that Doric temples were twice as long as they were wide, and once and a half as high as they were wide. The column was about six times its diameter in height, while the capital was one-half one diameter in height.…

Greek architecture is broken down into three orders. These orders were determined by the way that the top or capital of each column was sculpted. The first order was called the Doric Order. This was the most simple of the three. It was only meant for sturdiness, not for beauty. The second order was called the Ionic order. They had capitals sculpted like spiraling scrolls. They too were not that beautiful, but very sturdy. The third was the Corinthian Order. Ta the top of each capital of this order were carved Acanthus leaves. They were very beautiful, but not quite as sturdy as the other two. The columns were sometimes replaced with load-bearing statues called Caryatids.…
