Character Analysis: Buddha Boy
The ninth chapter of Buddha Boy starts at lunch where Megan is urging Justin to talk to Mr. Snell about Jinsen. So one day Justin decides to talk to Snell. Snell tells Justin he can’t help him anymore unless Jinsen gives a complaint. Also Snell hands Justin a form for a student art competition. Lastly, it ends with Justin heading to his locker walking past Magnur and Josh Winston. Where Justin gets teased as Josh Winston calls Jinsen ‘Butt Boy’.

This was a chapter where the readers learned some new information about Justin. For example, the readers find out about how much Justin wants to help Jinsen. Also, I believe Justin and Jinsen are now friends, even though Justin may not want to admit it. I assume every time Jinsen gets insulted Justin

It usually involves a hero that goes on a journey/adventure and defeats/solves something and comes home changed/transformed. It was the American scholar Joseph Campbell that introduced this concept. Spiderman is one of many heroes that follow this outline.…

James Baldwin’s “Come out the Wilderness,” presents the mentally isolated Ruth Bowman’s thoughts about men and her unwillingness to forget past relations. Growing up as a child, Ruth is sexually harassed by a guy whom her parents and brother think she is voluntarily sexually involved with. The events that happen in a previous era was a stepping stone into a life of low-self esteem and much insecurity that follows. The uncontrollable event causes her to be dependent on men and to have uncertainty in relationships. Ruth is educated in school, and she uses her skills on her job as a secretary, which she is promoted to. Ruth is a complicated woman in her thoughts as well as her actions. The feeling of not being wanted circulates Ruth’s mind. The memories of changed perceptions on her part by her family, devastates her. She has had past relationships but to no prevail in finding true happiness. Life in her eyes is characterized by being with a man who rarely acknowledges her features as a woman. He merely acknowledges when his urges have arisen and are in need of satisfying. Marriage to her seems as if a man is living with her whom she wants to love her and make her feel special ; though that is not the case. The relationship she has is inexplicable. Life may seem barren to a woman of Ruth’s nature. She goes to bars every night in hopes of time passing as she waits for her husband to get home. Ruth believes her husband has another woman, but does not obsess with the thought. She simply lives with his decisions whatever they may be, because she is dependent on him. Ruth is comparable to old-time wives in the way she allows her husband to do whatever he wants maybe because of masculinity or perhaps the doubt of him coming home. That signifies defeat, on her part, in the game of life.…

    A Manly Monk Essay

“A Manly Monk” is an intriguing look at the historical Buddha, with appropriate context for the time in which he lived, and with all the nuances of social norms exhibited and expected of men at the time he was alive. I really liked that it also gave note that some of the characteristics imposed upon the historical Buddha might not necessarily be accurate, or characteristics that he might not have exhibited when he was alive. As Powers notes, some of “this narrative is the creation of authors who lived long after his decease” (p. 66), which leaves open the potential that these authors imposed upon the historical Buddha their own version of events, and inevitably allowed them leeway when writing about the type of person he had been. Of course, this doesn’t mean they fabricated the historical Buddha’s life, but nevertheless I think there is some element of disjunction there, as with all historical takes on religion, that deserves some scrutiny; Powers leaves the door open to scrutinize these writings, but also appropriately emphasizes the complexities of historical norms and expected behaviors that the Buddha cannot resist simply because he was (and is) expected to be a supreme human. If anything, Buddha’s indulgences in excess, marital…

The most attention-grabbing section of the novel is when Joey met Miss Tidcombe while walking home from school. She invited Joey to her place for afternoon tea and told Joey that her cats have been strangely disappearing. Miss Tidcombe treats Joey as an equal and, so far, she is the only person who believes Joey. This is the best section of the novel because it tells the reader that someone believes Joey and this had a huge effect on Joey’s confidence and self- worth. The author captivates the reader in this section of the book by using humour and emotions of sadness.…

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

The book opens with Stephan’s recollection of his first memory. The stream of consciousness style works to display Stephan’s naïve and youthful views. In the first chapter of the book, when Stephan is very young, he tells his family that he would like to marry the neighbor girl. Stephan’s governess Dante becomes very angry with Stephan for making this statement. Although Dante is angered because Stephan’s neighbor is a protestant and Dante is a passionate Catholic, the reader sees the anger as inexplicable, the event is foreign and not explained clearly; the reader is expected to put these pieces together much later when we gain more insight into the characters, as Stephan only begins to understand the events when he is older. Stephan’s interactions with his peers are described with similar unfamiliarity, although Stephan’s confusion is emphasized to underline the intense nervousness he feels at these moments. When Stephan first arrives at the Catholic boarding school one of his classmates ask him if he kisses his mother before he goes to sleep. When Stephan tells the boy that he does kiss his mother…
