The Strength and Weaknesses of Cassie Maddox
After the death of a twelve year old girl, Katy Devlin, detective Cassie Maddox and detective Adam Robert Ryan were in charge to investigate the murder scene. It occurred in the same woods twenty years ago as the unsolved mystery to the death of Rob’s two best friends, Peter and Jamie. In Tana French’s, In the Woods, we were introduced to Cassie as the young, unique individual, with an easy going personality that instantly made her Rob’s best friend. As a detective, she expressed her strength and weaknesses in dangerous and difficult situations throughout the story. This is shown because right when his boss, O’Kelly found out that Rob had a possible connection to Katy’s murder case, the first person he accused of telling his real identity was Cassie. “How stupid do you think I am? I know you told him, Cassie” (359). He forgot how loyal of a friend she was and she put her own job at risk in the beginning to hide his secret. Another reason how he does not appreciate her is when he started to treat Cassie horribly after they slept together. After she identified Rosalind to be the suspect to the murder, Rob went off at Cassie and accused her of being jealous. When Cassie said, “Just because you’re sorry for her, and you fancy her, and you’re pissed off with me for some bloody bizarre reason of your own…” (350). She just started to get the idea that Rob wasn’t treating her the way he used to, it started to seem like he lost his respect towards her, or that she did something terribly wrong to him. “I’m sorry, I have to go. “I’ll be in work at some point tomorrow, or you can leave me a note”
