Charles And The Open Window

Everyone has lied at some point in their life. What do ‘’Charles’’ and ‘’The Open Window’’ both have in common? Both of these stories are centered around dishonest young people. The kids in these stories are very dishonest to adults Laurie from ‘’Charles ‘’ lies to his family and Vera from ‘’The Open Window lies to Mr. Nuttel and her aunt. Even though these kids lie but they both lie for difference reasons.
In the story of ‘’Charles’’ Laurie uses lies to excuse his actions. By making up a persona call Charles to take the blame for him. Nuttel mind by telling a tragic lie. When Mr. Nuttel first visits he Stapleton’s house he first meets Vera while they sat down and started chatting Vera came to the knowledge that Mr. Nuttel did not know her aunt so sue saw this as an opportunity to tell him a lie about a window that was open that day Vera told Mr. Nuttel that the reason the window was open it was because of Mrs. Stapleton’s husband and two brothers died while on a hunting trip and was never found. Vera tells Mr. Nuttel this: “three years ago, to a day, her husband and her two young brothers went off for a day shooting. They never came back.” (Munro 235). This quote show how Vera tricked Mr. Nuttel. After Mr. Nuttel heard Vera’s tell him this Mrs. Stapleton walks in and repeats everything that Vera told him which made him feel bad for her and he chanced the topic with a discussion at his diet Mr. Nuttel say ‘’On the matter of diet they are not so much in agreement” (Munro 234). this quote displays how Mr. Nuttel panicked when he heard repeat what Vera said. When Mr. Nuttel saw husband enter the room he thought he saw a ghost and left in a hurry. When Vera is asked why did he left so fast Vera created a lie about him being afraid of dogs Vera say ‘’I expect it was the spaniel,” said the niece calmly; ‘’ he told me he had a horror of dogs.’’ (Munro 235). This quote shows how Vera is about to lie again. Vera is very aware of what she is doing but does not care
