Philip Malloy's To Blame In The Story 'Nothing But The Truth'
Who is to blame?
People say that a half-truth is a whole lie. We lie every day saying it is for the best but is it really? We tell little half truths to protect other and ourselves but there are always consequences whether we tell the truth or lie. What consequences will you choose? Philip Malloy is a freshman at Harrison High School. He is learning about the consequences of telling half truths. He wanted out of miss Narwins class and homeroom so he tried to get out by being a disturbance and then lied about what happened so he lost a lot. In the story “Nothing But the Truth” by Avi, there are many people to blame for what happened in the story but the three people that are most to blame are Miss Narwin, Mr. and Mrs.Malloy, and Philip Malloy.

In the story, Philip Malloy is to blame because he did not apologize to Miss Narwin because he was too prideful and set on getting out of her class. Philip was sent to the office and the vice principal said that if Philip apologized then he would not have to suspend him but Philip was too prideful. If Philip would have apologized and talked about an agreement, he would not have been suspended. The other reason Philip is to blame is because he lied about what happened and he even lied to a reporter. Philip came home and lied to his parents and a reporter so then everyone thought that he was a hero but his friends knew the truth and did not like him for it. Philip should have told the truth because even though he was thought to be a hero, his friends knew he was not and he lost a lot.
Philip was the most to blame because of his actions, Mr. and Mrs. Malloy are to blame as well, and even though Miss Narwin is a good teacher, she is to blame. Philip Malloy is the most to blame because he could have avoided being suspended, losing his friends, and changing his schools, by just apologizing to Miss Narwin, but he was too prideful and then he lied to everyone about everything. From Philips mistakes, we can learn that we have to swallow our pride in hard situations and always tell the truth, even if it hurts, because if we do not do that, then we could hit a lot of people and lose

Throughout this semester of Paideia, I have read several books in which one or more of the characters know the truth about a certain matter and the others do not. The characters that know the truth then have to decide what to do with the truth. Do they keep it to themselves or share it with others? When both options have advantages and disadvantages, the person who has to make the choice is in a tough spot. This scenario has happened in two separate readings this semester: one in The Return of Martin Guerre and the other in The Allegory of the Cave. Using those two texts, I will be able to provide evidence that knowing the truth sometimes involves personal consequences or obligations.…

So the topic is that Lizzie Borden is guilty of killing her parents. In some cases they said that she isn't guilty but in my case she is. The reason being is that she was the only person that would have had a grudge against her parents, and her sister was out of town of the time of their deaths, so even though there was a rumor of a mysterious man lurking around the Gorden’s house at the times of death there is not enough facts that it is actually true. The evidence that i collected clearly states that she burnt a dress that was supposedly had a blood/paint spot on it. Which makes me believe that she is trying to hide something because she had others ways of getting rid of the old dress, like throwing it in the trash or giving it to the lower class.…

Narwin says “I don’t know who that is, but you heard Dr. Doane request silence.” She gives Phillip a warning. On page 113 Miss Narwin says “The boy was creating a serious disturbance.” She tells what happened and proves that she kicked him out, not suspended him. If the case went to court, then Phillip Malloy would win. On page 51 Phillip says “What would you say if a teacher said I wasn’t allowed to sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner?” First of all, it is rule to remain silent, second of all Ms Narwin gave Phillip a warning, and lastly, he was humming not singing. It’s just a thing I like to do. Sing along when the song is played.” Phillip never sang in Mr. Lunser’s room, and again, he is humming not…

Imagine what the world would be like if everyone thought that lying was acceptable. In the play the Crucible by Arthur Miller and in the noel A Break with Charity by Ann Ranadi, both include characters with different morals. Characters such as Abigail Williams from the Crucible and Ann Putnam from A Break with Charity, believe that, lying is not as big of a deal as it really is, because it does not affect them in any way, it only affects the people around them. Unlike Abigail and Ann, there are characters that are trustworthy and liable, such as Elizabeth English and John Proctor. Based off of these four different characters, it is begging the question; is lying justifiable? Lying is not Justifiable because it can negatively affect others…

The story is set in small town Saskatchewan in a police station office, on the night of August of 1957. Corporal Heasman has brought in Les Grant on the account of accused rape Tracy Tolbertson, and the play follows the questioning of Sergeant Finestad to Les, who retells his involvement with Tracy, the daughter of Mr. Tolbertson, the local crown attorney. The story has many sub conflicts; the tension between Finestad and Tolbertson being a main one. Tolbertson wants his daughter’s accused rapist behind bars, but Finestad wants to get the whole story instead of just listening to Tolbertson. Then there is the conflict of Finestad with himself; for years he has followed the law and stuck to the book, but in this case he is having a hard time sticking to the black and white because he feels that there is more to the story. All these sub conflicts underlie to the main conflict of the prejudices and biases that come from living in a small town, and the difficulties that come with dealing with that. These conflicts all lead up to the climax where Finestand goes against Tolbertson and against the prejudices of the town and lets Les Grant go, without charging him.…
