He is always happy, never understanding when someone was teasing or mocking him. All Charlie wants to do is fit in with everyone else so he can get to know more people. During this process and after, he is able to face his setback and realize that he needs to accept it which helps him move on and become more intelligent. Having been part of this experiment was good for him because he was able to grasp emotions that he was not aware of before and he understands what it is like to be super intelligent. Some might believe that he should not have had the experiment because he was worse after it was over, but Charlie was only better after the test.
Charlie Gorgon was able to grasp emotions that he was never aware of before the experiment. Before the tests, Charlie Gordon always thought that when his friends laughed at him, they were just acting like his friends. He wasn’t aware that they were actually making fun of him. After the experiment was over he realized who his real friends were and that if anyone laughed at him in the way that his old friends did, then they were not his real friends. Before the experiment made Charlie smart, he always tried his hardest to become more intelligent. He was extremely excited to take part in the tests, but this changed after the experiment was over, “I dont want to do nothing like that agen [sic] ” (Keyes 27). He first craves to be smart by doing the experiment, but after it is over he realizes that he never wants be take part in something like that again. If he had never been part of the experiment in the first place, then he would keep wondering what it would be like if he was part of it. Charlie would not have been able to move on from it. He would regret his choice of not being part of the experiment and just trying to be smart. Charlie Gordon desperately wanted to fit in with everyone so that he could make more friends. After he knows that he would never do something like that again. He learns an important lesson, knowing he should not try to change himself with any experiments.
