The 1919 Major League Baseball world series was a “battle” between the chicago Black Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. The series was “fixed”, meaning one team was paid under the table to loose, so the other team could be crowned champs. This is exactly what happened, the Chicago Black Sox were paid under the table to loose the series. This was the most serious scandal in sports history, and it shot the fans trust down for the sport tremendously right after it happened (“Infobase”). Why would someone take away from his career forever just for one little mistake like a corked bat? Although the Major League Baseball Association has a strict rule on tampering with bats, claiming he made a mistake, Sosa should have been trusted and given a warning, not a suspension (Weinberg). Just because Sosa’s punishment was minor, none should have been given at all. If the league lets a player compete for a paycheck, they should trust them enough to believe them when they say, “I grabbed the wrong bat, and I am truly sorry to my fans and to the MLB.” (Weinberg). Before being found with a corked bat, Sosa still easily crushed the hitting game, with stats like 2408 hits and 609 home runs (Weinberg).
