I’ve always been told that cheerleading will never be a sport or that all you do is cheer. Seeing all the hard work and techniques that girls from 5-18 have put in to achieve their dreams. according to the Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors, “Competition against an opponent, by rules and conditions under which a winner is declared, and purpose of the competition is a comparison
of the skills of the people participating .” Because cheerleading follows these guidelines, it is a sport. (Renee 1).
Watching Cheerleading is a very interesting sport to watch.
There are differences between Sideline cheerleading like (High school and Junior High) and competitive like (Collegiate level and world wide teams). Most people agree with this but still some don’t. I’m used to people saying that sideline cheerleading isn’t important and it doesn’t matter because it’s not much of a big help. Over review with along with other sports the IOC (International Olympic Committee) have decided to set the stage of becoming an Olympic sport. You could think of the girls flying each other in the air like a flying squirrel.
Cheerleading competitions are televised from statewide to nationally. If people became more familiar with the sport then more people could gain attention from it. If the IOC and ICU (International Cheer Union) were to come together it says “With at least $25,000 annually to promote the sport. During that time, the ICU can apply for full Olympic recognition in the Summer Olympic Games.” (Shultz 1). With the help of both teams this could really help everyone know that Cheerleading could be a part in the Olympics and fully understand it’s a sport. Next time someone tells you or a friend that Cheerleading isn’t a sport, tell them “Well the Olympic Committee begs to differ”.
