Chef Monica or Chef Andrew
Jhurie Robinson 5-paragraph composition 1/28/14

If I had the opportunity to visit Chef Monica Sallier’s restaurant or Chef Andrew Gleason’s restaurant then I would choose Chef Monica’s restaurant. The reasons why I would choose Chef Monica’s restaurant, it’s a more modern type restaurant, her food isn’t perfectly seasoned, she relies more on instinct and that’s pretty impressive to me. Her restaurant isn’t really a romantic type. You can bring some of your closest friends and not feel that you’re actually on a date. Chef Monica’s restaurant is more of a modern type restaurant. To me modern day isn’t old fashion; it’s more up to date. Modern day restaurants attract younger people than older people. You can have fun and enjoy yourself with lots of laughter and fun. She relies on instinct for seasoning food. To me that’s very impressive. Your food won’t be over seasoned or perfectly seasoned “It’s just right.” So you get a better taste of the dish. Monica says “If you eat at my restaurant you’ll never get the same dish twice.” Also, Chef Monica’s restaurant isn’t too romantic. If it’s not too romantic then you can invite friends. You can even invite family. Also everyone won’t be so tense. Since her restaurant isn’t too romantic then Monica can joke around in the kitchen. If you were to go to Chef Andrew’s restaurant you would not have as much fun. You wouldn’t be able to loosen up. You can’t loosen up because it’s too romantic. In the story it says that the dining experience is very private and peaceful, that’s so boring. So if you were to visit any of these two restaurants choose Chef Monica’s.

If a restaurant wants to be the best, then they have to meet some criteria in order to do so. The first defying factor, is whether the atmosphere the restaurant has, is an enjoyable one. Next, in order to have a good experience at that restaurant, the service has to good. This means not only friendly service, but quick service as well. Wouldn’t everyone love to go out and eat at restaurants every night and not have to worry about spending money? This is what Ruth Reichl does for living. Reichl is an incredible writer, person, and food critic. She wrote her memoir Garlic and Sapphires, telling her life story from her point of view. “The book is about an institution, the New York Times, but also about the transformations — both physical and emotional — that Reichl made in order to succeed there.”(Traister). Reichl disguises herself and eats at the fanciest restaurants in America. “Garlic and Sapphires is Reichl’s third memoir. Her previous memoirs deal with relationships between food and love. She wrote her story Garlic and Sapphires…

In A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O’Connor uses foreshadowing and symbolism to portray the threat and eventual presence of death in her story. In the beginning of the story O’Connor foreshadows the appearance of The Misfit who has a big part to play in the later part of the essay (O’Connor 3). On page four, an accident is foreshadowed then the author states if someone finds “her (the grandmother) dead on the highway… they would know she was a lady”(O’Connor 4). One of the most glaring connection to death was in the part of the drive when the family sees “five or six graves” which symbolize the death of the 6 members of the family (O’Connor 5). The Misfit is mentioned again when the family stops at a barbecue place called The Tower (O’Connor…

The food was very flavorful as well as authentic to the Louisianan style that includes French and Spanish heritage, the only thing that I would change is that the food came out slightly hotter. The service and hospitality of the restaurant and its employees was one of the most polite and pleasant experiences I've had in a while. Not only did the employees treat their customer with high respect, but also their fellow coworkers. The atmosphere was very laid back and relaxed with a family friendly feel but also mature enough for a fully functioning bar. The live band was a very nice addition as well, although it could be a little quieter because of how small the restaurants size is and how the sound carries very well. All in all though, I had a great time and I very much look forward to my next visit to Gulf Coast…

I could see the intricate designs of grapevines that had been masterfully carved into the light oak posts that held the entryway above my head. Through a miniature window on the far side of the room, I could get a slight glance of the steaming pasta noodles that had been drenched in luscious red spaghetti sauce, before the waitress guided us to our seats. I could feel anticipation building up as the waitress guided us to one of the most well placed tables in the whole restaurant. The light brown, cloth drapes that rested against the smooth brick wall of the restaurant grazed my arm as I passed under one of the exits outside. As soon as the fresh air whipped my face, the noticeable scent of fresh chocolate mousse cake assaulted my nose. I could feel the soft, plush cushioning that rested underneath my backside as I sat down to great relief. My eyes scanned my surroundings, taking in all the sights and smells that I could contain within myself without being overwhelmed. Of all the places to be right then, Charleston was the one. I had experienced the smell of chocolate, the taste of lasagna, the sound of the ocean, the sight of warm, crisp sand, and the feeling of being happy and glad for what I…

During this experience I defiantly wanted to avoid Role Conflicts. I had decided to sit in a corner area of the restaurant that allowed me to be observant but not disrespectful. After the experience was over I was happy with the overall outcome. Even though food wasn’t the greatest I was able to finish it and the assignment correctly. The area of Fresno that this took place in is considered to be upper class society. There isn’t many people of that culture in that part of the neighborhood either. The menu certainly fit in with the community the food being high priced. I was expecting to see a lot of different cultures inside the restaurant but that wasn’t the case at all. The restaurant was very clean and had very nice décor. I don’t know much about the culture but from what I have seen…

In “Picky Eater”, Julia Alvarez writes about how she became a picky eater and how food influenced her life, the way she eats and even perceived foods. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, foods outside the home where not necessarily safe and therefore forbidden. Since infant mortality was high, Julia’s mother worried about her children growing up healthy and hence forcing food on her kids. This carries over to her adulthood and she describes her eating habits during college as well as how her habits changed when she met her current husband and how food is now an important part of her life. “Being a picky eater, my one criterion for food was: is it something I might eat?'”…
