Chemical Synthesis Lab Report
PRE-LAB
The purpose of the lab is to determine the moles of hydrogen gas and then molar mass of the metal. First, the metal assigned to each group must be weighed out in order to ensure the hydrogen gas produced will not exceed the capacity for the gas measuring tube. Then, copper will be wrapped around the metal leaving 6-8cm at the end for a handle. The end wire will be bent into a hook to keep the sample at the bottom of the tube and increase the oxidation rate. A ring stand will need to be set up and 10mL of HCl is added to the eudiometer and then topped of with distilled water. The metal is then added to the eudiometer and a stopper is used to seal it. There should not be any extra gas in the eudiometer and if there is, the stopper

The activation energy obtained in Part C, 138.6 kJ/mol is not too far below the theoretical activation energy of 148.526 kJ/mol[6], while Part A confirms the theory that k is dependent on the initial concentration of reactants, since it is a first order reaction. This is clearly depicted in Figure 3, where the alteration of the amount of t-butyl chloride being added to the reaction vessel clearly produced a different rate constant. The findings from Part B of the experiment proved that the reaction followed the SN1 mechanism, with the increased concentration of water in the water/acetone mixture causing the reaction rate to increase due to the usage of polar solvents to stabilize the carbocation being produced during this mechanism in the slow, rate-determining step [5]. However, there were errors in the experiment, which led to the results being slightly off from theory, such as the lower than expected value for the activation…

Cellular transport of taurine is sodium dependant. The ratio of sodium molecules to taurine molecule transported varies in different tissues ranging from 3:1 to 1:1.Transport of taurine in brain require at least 3 Na+ molecules, transport of hypotaurine require 2 Na+ molecules. Transport of taurine takes place in both neurons and glial cells. The transport in glial cells is greater than neurons and astrocytes. Deficiency of taurine stimulates retinal transport of taurine. The sites in mammalian retina where taurine transport is concentrated are, pigment epithelium, photoreceptors and neuronal amoxine cells.…

After the purification, the ester yield synthesised is only 67%-70% and a maximum 70% yield of ester usually is not considered to be acceptable for a synthesis reaction, instead it is considering as a poor yield of ester. The synthesised ester can only have a maximum yield of 70% because for ester in which the carboxylic acid and alcohol are sterically unhindered, a same ratio mixture of carboxylic acid and alcohol can only synthesis ester with a maximum yield of 70% ester as the reaction with the same ration of mixture will reach a state of equilibrium, which the concentration of all the species will remain constant, thus cannot goes to the completion and 100% yield of ester can’t be obtained. Besides, during reflux, the reactant and production will evaporate and condensed back to liquid and run down back to the reactant flask. During this process, some volatile organic reactant such as alcohol and carboxylic acid or the products like ester might evaporate or escape into the atmosphere result in the low yield of ester.…

Chemical reactions is a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance. There are different types of reaction such synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion. Synthesis is where two or more reactants combine to create a product. For Decomposition, it is the opposite where a product breaks down into reactants. In Single Replacement, reactants switches an element with another element to make a new product. Then, in Double Replacement, two reactants switches an element or compound to make a two new products. Lastly, for Combustion, it is when oxygen and a hydrocarbon react to create water and carbon dioxide.…

Observing the information collected throughout the duration of the experiment, it is apparent that most of the reactions between the ionic compounds have shown signs of chemical change such as formation of precipitates, colour change, and bubbling. Unlike the single displacement experiment, this experiment provided more visible changes. Nevertheless, out of the five reactions, one did not show any signs of chemical change. Sodium chloride reacting with potassium nitrate stayed the same throughout the experiment. Except for this reaction, all the other reactions have an insoluble ionic compound by which creates precipitates.…

The chemical reaction that I chose to focus on was the 3rd reaction with the yeast and hydrogen peroxide. The testable question my group asked is “What would happen if we changed the amount of times we stirred the water and yeast mixture with the hydrogen peroxide and soap mixture.” I asked this question because I wanted to do experiment where it would change the amount of foam that was created. And I know this question is testable because we can collect data from it. In our case, the data we will be collecting is the ml of foam.…

Chemical reactions are a part of everyday lives. Whether it is the burning of propane at a kitchen stove, or washing detergent reacting with dirt stains, chemical reactions are useful tools that have widespread applications. With so many reactions assisting our everyday activities, it is important that ways to optimise reaction rates are investigated. “Reaction rate, the speed at which a chemical reaction proceeds… may be defined in terms of the amounts of the reactants consumed or products formed in a unit of time,” (K. Laidler, May 17 2018). The easiest ways to speed up a reaction include increasing the temperature, pressure, agitation, surface area exposed to reaction, and concentration of the reacting species.…

The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the activity of enzymes, components that influence the enzyme’s activity, identify an unknown phosphatase, influence of inhibitors, and determine if inhibition is competitive or noncompetitive. A spectrophotometer evaluated the measurement of color change over a period time due to product being formed. Determining unknown phosphatase and effects from different inhibitors were determined by varying the pH and substrate concentrations. The unknown phosphatase analyzed showed it was an acidic phosphatase. Ph 5 had the most enzyme activity and pH 9 presented 1/3 of enzyme activity, while pH of 11 had little activity. The Vmax of 0mM, 10mM, and 20mM showed the inhibitor was competitive. In the…
