Cherokee Ball Game: How Lacrosse Was Invented By Native Americans And Their Culture
Cherokee Ball Game

Lacrosse was invented by Native Americans in what is now eastern North America in the 1400s. It was played mostly by Cherokee tribes in the southeast and Mohawk tribes in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Valley areas. The strategy of the game is the same today as it was then. Players use long poles with nets to move a ball down a field toward another team’s goal. To score they must get the ball into the goal. Today, lacrosse is played as a professional and a recreational sport. Native Americans played it recreationally, but it was also an important part of their culture.

What would the atmosphere at lacrosse games have been like six hundred years ago? The competitions were usually major events with many different villages

After Naismith thought about his future, he decided that the only real satisfaction that would derive from life was to help his fellow man. 1883 Naismith left Almont for McGill University where he earned a degree in theology. Naismith was now in search for a new game that could be played inside during the winter months. This job was one of the hardest and was given to Naismith and a class that was completely uninterested in the routine exercises. There had been three previous instructors that have gone down in defeat trying to rouse enthusiasm in that group of young men. Naismith had a long fought struggle with the class of young men with no success. “I had pinned my hopes on these two games and when they failed me, there seemed little chance of success,” Said Naismith (McCuaig). He tried to modify both football and soccer with no luck he then turned to lacrosse a game that he learned in Almont thinking this would work seeing how there were a few members of the group that were from Canada and knew how to play the game but still had no luck getting the group to want to participate (“Basketball in America”).…

More specifically, I’d like to teach you guys something I’ve picked up over the years. Some of you might be like Sammy or Paul and automatically dismiss the idea of lacrosse based on a previous bias they have made from baseball. But according to multiple sources such as Sports Illustrated and Business Insider, lacrosse is by far the fastest growing sport in America. This affects all of us because, well, we all live in America. Plus, I can almost guarantee you know someone who plays this sport. But I’m not here to convince you of this sport’s magnitude, I actually wish to explain how I string my lacrosse sticks.…

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we were an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries.…

In mostly all sports, the teams use mascots to show their teams strength and pride. The mascots are used as a factor of intimidation and also as a team motivator. Mascots can range from the fiercest animals to the smallest inanimate object. Mascots in general never fall under scrutiny except for the ones that that represent the Native Americans, tribes or cultures. The idea of having related names to the Native Americans seems respectful and honorable for most of the society as it is a tribute to the Indians that have arrived at this country first. The other side of society finds it degrading and racist to call the teams these names, but in reality, it is showing respect and honor for their culture.…

Interestingly enough, color was used as a symbol to indicate that the memory of the Native Americans lived on into the present-day. For instance, Watson, the Overlook’s custodian, showed Jack the boiler’s mechanics. As he pointed out the functionality of the boiler, he stated that, “ ‘Yellow is the west wing’ ” (King 6, 25, 26). Yellow is the color of remembrance, which demonstrated that the Overlook’s Presidential Suite was potent with memories of the past that wanted to make themselves known to Danny (King 6, 25, 26, 133, 134). King utilized color as an effective motif when he described the west wing of the Overlook.…
