Ava was born to Kim C. and Rob M. in August 2006. At the time, Kim had a 10 year old daughter, Sofia (an old friend of mine), and a 13 year old son, Danny from a previous marriage. Rob had no other children and had never been married. Kim and Rob married about a year after Ava was born, and divorced about a year later. Since a very young age, Ava has spent her time moving between her parents’ and grandparents’ houses, like many children of divorced parents.
Kim has problems with alcohol consumption, and has in the past struggled with an eating disorder. She has little patience for raising an elementary schooler, especially now that her other two children have moved out. Kim and her children are very close to their family: Aunts, cousins, and grandparents all live in the same city so they see each other multiple times a week and provide a lot of support.
When Ava was younger, she was a compulsive liar, making up ridiculous stories about her family members. More recent to my observations, Ava claimed she was …show more content…
nine years old even though she was eight at the time of observation, and insisted that she had reached an unreasonably high level on a difficult game. Sofia says that Ava is extremely sensitive to criticism, even requests as simple as “Stop leaning on me.” Ava frequently has a very difficult attitude and is difficult to control. During conversations with Sofia, I learned that Ava makes very good grades, although her teachers comment that she talks out of turn during class or that she is a distraction to her classmates. Ava loves animals, particularly horses. She has her own computer and iPad, and tells me that she doesn’t really read. Sofia also mentioned that Ava is unusually outgoing for a child her age, and will talk to just about anyone. In my observations, Ava is vibrant, energetic, and inquisitive.
Thesis
In spite of a relatively stressful young life, my observations indicate that Ava’s development has not been impaired and although she has some behavioral problems, they are mostly typical of her age.
Observation 1
After agreeing to watch Ava (9), Chloe (11), and Luca (6), on July 25, 2015, we decided that we were going to play hide-and-go-seek tag and that I would be the base.
Ava was the seeker first, and she asked if she could hug me and cover her eyes by pressing against me while she counted. I told her that was fine. I slowed her down and counted for her when she started counting too fast in an attempt to catch the other children before they were done hiding. When we finished counting, she whined a little bit and tried to convince me to tell her where the other children were hiding. She pouted briefly and skipped away to look for them. She found Luca first and gleefully shouted “I found Luca!” Apparently Luca had not understood the rules, or that he was supposed to run away and touch the base before he could be tagged. Ava insisted that no matter what, the game had already started and she had tagged him, so he was the seeker
now.
