Childcare is a significant economic issue for any working parent. Its affordability and suitability has a strong influence on the number of children parents decide to have as well as on their professional life. A Subsidy is an amount of money paid by the government to a firm in order to increase production and consumption. More specifically, childcare subsidies aim to support financially low-income families with the costs of educating their child. Nowadays, public support for childcare is rising in many countries around the world. During its meeting in Barcelona in 2002, the European Council planned to provide childcare by 2010 to at least 33% of children under three and to at least 90% of children between three and eighteen.1 The Australian government fixed a target to invest an additional $3.5 billion on preschool day care from July 2017, to make it easier, cheaper, more accessible and flexible.2 The Irish government aim to provide subsidised childcare for children up to the age of twelve, for all working families, since the unaffordability of child care has been point out, by the European Union, as a significant issue in Ireland.3 Sweden has one of the highest spending on family benefits in the European Union; today, parents only have to pay about ten per cent of the actual costs of day-care4. However, it is argued that, having one, many or no children is a private lifestyle choice and society should not be responsible of the decisions that have to be made on how to raise those children.
