Childhood In Thomas Cole's The Voyage Of Man
The piece of artwork that struck me the most was Thomas Cole's the voyage of man. The art gallery only had one painting from a series of four so I looked up the other two and really took in the flow of the four paintings together. I found it very interesting to see how the artist portrayed the different stages of life. He shows childhood as bright and easy by by representing it with a gently flowing river and sunny sky, which I find are accurate depictions of the early stages of life. The character of childhood is portrayed by a man in a boat who is simply along for the ride. The second painting portrays youth. This painting has much of the same scene as childhood but now the figure in the boat grabs firmly to the tiller symbolizing the start

For my visual analysis assignment I chose to go visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It has been an extremely long time since I last visited a museum. I took my twelve year old son with me to explore what the museum had to offer. We found the art to be very interesting, educational and unique. There were so many beautiful pieces throughout the museum that it was difficult trying to decide which one I wanted to base my visual analysis on.…

The Course of Empire by Thomas Cole is by far the only traditional series of paintings that I enjoy and out of the five paintings I enjoy the most is the second painting titled The Arcadian State. As a person with an affinity for History, I enjoy it because it shows that state when humanity comes into its own both technologically and socially and in turns of the paintings really begins changing shape into a what will become an empire.…

Thomas Cole’s piece titled The Voyage of Life: Youth is part of a four-part series that traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the "River of Life." This piece was made in 1842 and is currently located in The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The piece is oil on canvas, and it is hanging on the wall with the remaining four stages of human life; childhood, manhood, and old age. Thomas Cole’s oil painting process started with a thin and even application of an additional ground to the already prepared supports in order to harmonize his distinctive color palette. Sometimes he applied the paint quite thinly, but he varied the density of his pigments—they are especially thick in the bright highlights.…

The trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum was an insightful and eye opening experience. It was my second trip to a large art museum, the first one being The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Though I am not one you would call an art connoisseur, I do take interest in specific art pieces. I often find myself wondering what the artist was thinking about when painting or constructing a piece of work. I wonder what emotions they might have been going through or if someone unknown inspired them to create such things. Obviously sometimes such information is known but I am not sure I always believe it. I also speculate about the artist’s families, and if any of them were as talented as the artists themselves, as if maybe it was inherited or something.…

Aurora Per 3 Daily Color Progression by Alfred Jensen was the work that appealed to me the most as I walked through the galleries. The high contrast within the piece is what stood out the most, especially the stark straight line in the middle of the composition separating black from white. I found it kind of odd that this painting caught my eye because I'm typically drawn to works that use a lot of color, but I liked the way the limited color palette lent itself to making the colors that were used, stand out. The contrast aided the piece in being complementary in proportion and color palette, and my eye was drawn to the use of secondary colors green and orange as a way to bring attention to the words which themselves complement and contrast…

    Norton Museum

When taking a trip to the Norton Museum of Art I chose a one dimensioned painting called Adam that was located on the first floor. The artist is Nicholas Carone and was painted in 1956. To the left of the painting, Adam, was another painting named Personage which was painted by Robert Mothewell in 1943. Personage is an abstract oil painting on canvas with multiple different colors. To the right of Adam was a sculpture called Sea Quarry and was created by Theodore Roszak. The sculpture was not an obvious choice that it was a sea animal at first. I had to stand there for a minute and really look at the sculpture to being to see what it was really intended for the sculpture to be. Returning to my original choice, Adam by Nicholas Carone, it is also an oil painting done on canvas. Carone first started with a plane black picture and continued to manipulate it with white paint color and other lines using different thick and thin brushes. The picture was made to represent and recreate light and shadow but is opaque. It uses several different elements of art including color, value, line, shape, and space. “Adam”s composition is curved lines and is known as an Abstract Expressionism type of art.…

The paintings “The Lifeline” by Winslow Homer and “Prairie on Fire” by Charles Deas are two paintings that really struck out to me as similar. I think Homer’s painting, “The Lifeline”, is a very dramatic painting because of how the lady is just laying there passed out while this brave man is swinging across dangerous waves and rocks to get them to safety. Its very different from looking at in class because you can actually see the texture and brush strokes the artist used. When standing in front of a painting, it almost feels like your there watching this happen. You can see all the different details from the small brush strokes to the large ones, and the effect of light almost makes them look like they are glistening. I selected Charles Deas painting to compare to Homer’s painting because in both paintings a woman is passed out and is…

    Andy Goldsworthy - Paper

Andy Goldsworthy was born in 1956 in Cheshire England. He was raised in Yorkshire England and attended both Bradford and Lancaster art college from 1974-1978("Andy Goldsworthy - Biography"). I was first introduced to this artist in class the other day when we watched his video “Rivers and Tides”. During the opening scene of the video Goldsworthy discussed a very unique obsession with the shape of winding rivers. The way that he talked about these rivers and their mere existence in nature was unlike anything I have ever encountered before…. I understand that the purpose of this writing assignment is to focus on one artist, and one single work of art the artist created. I regret to inform you that I have decided to stray from the guidelines you have provided for us in an attempt to challenge my own understanding of true art, and the beauty that is flushed through your body when you encounter it. I have struggled through most of the semester to connect with you and the other classmates while discussing art. It is not because I am an arrogant person; it is because I had to find my own meaning and place of belonging in the art world. I am a firm believer that until you make a true personal connection with art you can never gaze upon it the way that I saw you did every day. In order to become truly passionate about art, you have to grasp its concept and what it means to you and you alone. It took me a while to realize that what you are expected to think or know about a particular piece of art makes no difference. It is what you can pull together, understand, and make meaning of for yourself. Understanding and appreciating art goes very far past the physical world. I used to think that if I assimilated myself to merely looking at art and learning about its history and more technical features I would get it. I was terribly wrong; art goes far beyond the physical world.…

My favorite two pieces would have to be Chris Kahler’s Viral A-9 and Lindsay Mills’s Beautiful Confusion. The way the gel and paint looked on the canvas in Chris Kalher’s work of art was really cool. It had my attention as so as I turned to walked down the stairs. It looked like a growing virus. Lindsay Mills’s use of colors and the way they we applied to the canvas was amazing. I told my wife I wanted to buy it and she said no you cannot. Her work of art was the most appealing to me in the whole…

    1. I would award Tom Wesselmanns’ Great American Nude painting for first place because the artistic form of colors are bright and full of life which leads me to believe that the artist that painted this picture also felt this woman herself was bright and full of life. But the woman still has a little bit of mystery which is why he didn’t paint a face on her. We can tell she lives a modern lifestyle because of the phone, perfume and flowers. For second place, I would award Giorgione, Sleeping Venus because the slumber way she lays makes it seem almost as though she is a goddess. This painting has a lot of detail and I can tell that the artist participated a lot of his attention and time to creating it. The third place…

The image I chose was Leonardo da Vinci's anatomical sketches, the reason I chose this artwork and drawings was it intrigues me how precise Da Vinci's drawings were and how he viewed the anatomy of the human body. Back then there wasn't x-rays or any technological advancements that would allow someone to see the human body but Da Vici was able to use his mind and envision how the anatomy of the human body is and draw it. The drawings many of his first human images were anatomically inaccurate representations of received wisdom about the structures, functions, and connections of the human body. As an artist, engineer and sculptor he didn't just want to construct the artworks he wanted to know how the human body worked and where certain emotions…

The first week of class learning about the roles of an artist was interesting to me. The artists follow four traditional roles in art which are record the world, give form to abstract ideas, give form to hidden truths, and help us to see the world in new and innovative ways. This to me was interesting because everyone should know that most art work comes from some historical background of something or it has a good meaning behind the piece of art. Knowing that was a role, I understood this role. The part that still gets me in this is the give form to hidden truths. This is the kind of art that catches my eyes as it is a challenge to see what everyone else is seeing. They also follow three traditional functions of art which are education, entertainment, and art about art. Some of the works of art we view under this topic were quite interesting as well. The ones that stood out more to me were, Albert Bierstadt’s, Rocky Mountains done with oil on canvas from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. The less traditional function is art about art, but in the new era you would think it would be a higher pick. The piece we viewed for this was done by Kasimir Malecich of a self-portrait in 1915, and was from the Stedulijk Museum in Amsterdam.…
