Childhood Memories
As we grow older and return to the places of our childhood, we are often surprised to discover things are not as we remember. A child's memory of a place, such as a family[->0] vacation spot, will be very different from that of an adult's. Particular details like size, glamour, and level of excitement are often escalated in the eyes of a child. One place I loved as a child was Disney World, in Orlando Florida. The day after school[->1] was out, my parents would take me, my sisters, and brother in law, to Florida. I can remember the excitement I felt as we loaded in the car. The trip took about ten hours. During that time, my family and I would plan our day down to the last detail. First we would ride the roller coaster and then the rocket ride. After driving for what seemed like days, we finally arrived. I remember thinking to myself how big the park was. I felt like a small fish in the ocean. Everything looked so big and so scary. First, we headed straight to the roller coaster. As we got on the coaster car and began up the steep incline, I remember thinking I was high enough to touch the clouds. This roller coaster had to be the biggest in the world! After the roller coaster, our next stop was the rocket ride. The rocket would shift back and forth, move up and down, and pivot all around. I felt like a real astronaut. After all the moving around in the rocket, Daddy decided he would take us to the arcade so our stomachs could settle down. I remember I would always try to win the big stuffed bear at the bottle toss, but it was always too hard. Soon we would be out of quarters, and Daddy would tell us it was time to leave. I can remember my sister and I begging to stay longer, but we always had to go. As we loaded in the car to head to the condo, I can remember thinking to myself that when I grew up I would bring my children to the park and let them stay as long as they wanted. A few years ago, my sister took my niece and nephew to Disney World. And I

Jacob, my oldest son, has memories based on the wonderful sights of Disney World. Obviously, the most impressive image that comes to him is the colossal image that comes into view almost as soon as you enter the park. He recalls the vibrant colors that seemed to guide you from one attraction to another. He enjoyed the illuminating fireworks that lite up the starry night. But to my surprise, his favorite memory was taking numerous photos with the characters that could be found everywhere you looked.…

When I was a little girl I use to always go to the park and while swinging I would imagine how much cooler it would be to live in a big city with lots of people and many things to see and experience. I never would have thought that at my age I would be sitting and relishing all the amazing times I had in my small home town. The family traditions, slow living and many childhood memories hold my heart in my hometown of Norfolk Nebraska. The boldly colored green grass, light brown cat tails lining the lake shore and fishing poles hanging off a dock all are vivid in my mind when thinking about the weekends I experienced in my adolescence.…

Whilst looking through my collection of photographs I discover a bundle labelled “Orlando, Florida 2005”. Just then a lot of very happy memories came flooding back, these pictures seem like they where only taken yesterday. Yet they where taken 12 years ago, my last family holiday. I can remember every detail about this particular holiday, obviously it had such a huge impact on me. I recall visiting Disneyland and meeting all the Disney princesses I was so gobsmacked. It was all a 5 year old little girl could dream of! I would clutch my big sisters hand and jump up and down with excitement. One of my fondest memories was doing the princess tour, my sister was 12 and she just did anything to make her little sister happy so obviously she joined…

We drove down in separate cars from Kentucky enduring about thirteen long hours of “fun” with my immediate family. We finally arrive in animal kingdom where we are staying in one of the Disney hotels. We get to our room and get settled in when I look out on the balcony and see giraffes, and antelopes, and peacocks walking around in my back yard. It was one of my favorite parts of this trip. We then go out to wait for the bus to take us to our first kingdom, epcot. I remember immediately being here as a child and know exactly what I want to go and do and see. Now being seventeen, I take one of my cousins and we go off on our own to see what we want to experience. We go to the science museum and learn about space and evolution which has through my high school years been very beneficial to me. Having fun and learning at the same time was great. I spend the entire next day going around to all the rides and enjoying them at least two times each. I couldn’t believe how much fun I was having. After that I went to the stores and got all the things I wanted to take back home to remember this trip…

When I woke up that friday I was super excited because I knew that I was leaving the country and going to Paradise. We did some shopping in the morning but we had to be on the cruise by four p.m. When the cab pulled up to the boat my jaw dropped. It was a carnival cruise ship that I thought was the size of the titanic. We boarded the ship and went to our room to relax. The ship had more than thirteen floors and multiple decks and pools. The first day I got lost each time I had to go back to my room because the ship was that big. First they had a life jacket drill which just explained what to do if something was too ever happen to the ship. After that that’s when the deck party began. They had karaoke, dancing and just little meet & greet activates. Next thing you knew it was time for bed and then the next morning is when I woke up in the Bahamas. I thought I was dreaming because it looked like a scene from a movie or a picture from a calendar.…

Right as I was up next in line, the rest of my family finally joined me and we all got in a kart. “Three, Two, One, GO!”, the ticket booth worker yells, and off we went. After my triumphant victory, the whole family went on a search for some kind of restaurant because we were starved from all the excitement. We ended up finding a nice restaurant where we bought things like hotdogs and hamburgers. The hotdog I got was delicious and it filled my stomach to the max. Later that night, the firework show started above the Magical Kingdom. As the curious and energetic children that my sisters, Fillip, and I were, we didn’t want to watch the show so we went on to a Snow White mine cart ride. This was the most memorable part for me because this was the ride that ended my fear for roller coasters. I don’t really know how or why this ride cured my fear, but I was happy about it. Immediately after, I told my parents, “I want to ride Space Mountain!”. My sisters were completely okay with riding the coaster again so we went straight o Space Mountain. After the long line we were forced to wait in, I finally climbed aboard the roller coaster and prepared for the ride. And in the blink of an eye, we were speeding down the darkened track. I was happily surprised to know that I was no longer scared and I enjoyed the ride a…

Every person has at least one significant place that is cemented in their memory more than others. No matter where it is, it appears much more richly in our minds than most other places, and triggers a series of emotions and recollections. Some of the most prominent memories of my childhood spring from my family’s annual Christmas spot in Paris Landing state park. When Hugh was growing up as a child, he saw things that children should not be forced to witness. Hugh’s class took a field trip to a slaughterhouse one day, where they were treated to a pig’s execution. “…One of the brothers drew a pistol from his back pocket, held it against the animal’s temple, and shot the piglet, execution-style.” (Paragraph 6, page 109) At another occasion, Hugh witnesses a dead man on a telephone pole. “Unlike me, he left the theater two hours later, to find a dead man hanging from a telephone pole at the far end of the unpaved parking lot.” (Paragraph 10, page 110) Hugh was often neglected by this family and spent majority of his adolescence with surrogate parents. Hugh’s life wasn’t the not good at all but Sedaris wanted Hugh’s life.…

As a small child I was a big fan of Disney World and Disneyland. I spent several summers at each amusement park with my godparents. My parents surprised me with a special trip. We drove 6 hours to see the Neuschwanstein castle. It was very early in the morning and extremely cold. The castle is built on the top of a mountain. There were two options for getting up the mountain to see the castle, walking or by horse drawn carriage. We took the carriage in hopes that it would be slightly…

When we landed my moms brother Matt came and picked us up from the airport and took us to our hotel where we were staying until we went to Disneyland. After the whole Disneyland trip we went to Hollywood and walked on the stars and met tons of cool people. The next day we went to Long Beach and swam in the ocean and collected seashells. On our last day there we went to see the Queen Mary and when I first saw it, I just remember how big it was. It was easily bigger than our school, it was just immense and I remember thinking about how they even managed to make a ship that big back…

Deep inside every person’s heart, one’s own childhood know-how forges the most precious recollections one has. There could be just one or numerous past experiences, a myriad of rotating memories formed between childhood and adolescence, which make the two so memorable.
