Introduction In my discussion I have chosen to talk about childhood obesity. Child obesity is growing throughout the world. The percentage of obese children in America is rising every year. We can learn new things about this topic and can share my learning with others. Doing research on this topic helps me to better understand how to prevent my children from becoming obese. It also helps others to learn about the problems of obesity we have in America. I plan to limit the topic by separating the two leading causes believed to be genetics and diet and lack of exercise. “According to the 1999 through 2002 NHANES survey, 16 percent of children ages 6 through 19 years of age are overweight. Not only have the rates of obesity increased, but heaviest children in recent NHANES survey were markedly heavier than those in previous surveys.” (National Center of Health Statistics, 2005) This shows me that if we continue among the path that we are currently on the obesity charts will continue to rise throughout or future. His gym teacher instructs the class to run two laps around the track. This child already has problems breathing, but does not realize the extent of his problem just yet. All the kids begin to laugh at this child because he is breathing too hard and cannot make it around the track once. This causes severe damage to a child’s self-esteem. He then becomes too shy to try to make any friends at his school in fear that the other children are teasing him. When a child grows in this type of environment it causes the child possibly eat excessively throughout his entire lifetime. An article on stereotyping from the Ashford University Library states “Even after a person leaves a situation where they faced negative stereotypes, the effects of coping with that situation remain.” (Kemick, 2010) Outside of illnesses we also can see that obese children have a hard time making friends in schools causing
