From around 3 months babies start to make simple single syllable sounds, later developing into two syllable sounds by around 7 months. At 9 months babies know their own name.
By 18 months children start to say recognisable, real words and professionals predict children know around 3 to 20 words by this point. From 18 months onwards language develops quickly and by 2 years the childâ€TMs vocabulary increases to around 200 words. Children starting to use their words to get information from people and repeating words that they may hear other people saying. By three, more formal sentences are forming and children are able to deliver simple messages. Between the ages of 5 and 7 children have a vocabulary of a round 1500 - 4000 words and they can construct complex sentences.
