Qin Shi Huang, founder of the Qin dynasty from 221-207bc went beyond functional design with his motif collection because in his tomb before death, he brought over 8,000 sculptures including a council of high-ranking officials, musicians, dancers, acrobats, as well as the terra-cotta warriors which signified afterlife protection of everything that the emperor valued in his tomb. One of Chinas best military leaders Qin Shi Huang ruled during the previously mentioned years as the countries first emperor. When farmers stumbled upon the statues while digging a well 2,200 years later, roughly 8,000 terra-cotta soldiers became rediscovered in 1974. This event marked as one of the greatest hoards of ceramic art history. It…

Was Christopher Columbus the first to discover America? Nowadays if you ask someone who was the first to discover America, most would say Christopher Columbus. But if you ask a real historian or a history professor, they would go back as far as 70 years before Columbus discovered America. Columbus may have been the first to discover America, but evidence shows that there was another man who discovered America 70 years before Columbus. This man was a 15th Chinese Admiral who lived during the Ming Dynasty and he is Zheng He. Zheng He served the Ming Dynasty Emperor, Zhu Di (Yong Le), and was leader of 7 voyages in the Indian Ocean. He visited more than 30 countries with a…
Shi Pei Pu was a Chinese opera singer who disguised himself as a woman. He indulged in a 20-year long romantic affair with French diplomat Bernard Boursicot convincing him that he was a woman and even presented him with their child later. Boursicot was an accountant at the French embassy and passed along confidential documents to help Pu win the favor of the Chinese Communist Party. They were both caught on charges of espionage in France in 1986 and each was sentenced to six years in prison. They served just one year of sentence and were pardoned later. Pu died at the age of…

One of the first instances that I can remember concerning cultural shock, was when I took a Western Caribbean cruise with friends. I was naïve and in my early twenties, traveling with three other females for spring break. We spent three days on the beaches of FL, and then took a four-day cruise that stopped at multiple Latin American destinations.…
Later we ate our lunch and I actually socialized with other people! After that we went on a tour on the edge of the lake. Even though it was our last day being on the week long trip we had a lot of fun and had a good time.…

I’ve been to China when I was just three years old, in 2009. It was a first experience for many, many things and activities. It was the first time I went fishing, two years later I was obsessed with fishing, I went to eat things that are almost only from that area, and I also learned how to ride a bike there. It’s a place of fun and memory for me. Even though it has a lot of cons,(cleanliness, air conditioning, smell, …) it also has a lot of pros too though (lots of activities, pet turtles, better food, there’s a park in my area, and family time). I really, really like traveling to China, that’s basically what I want to say. We go…
In ancient Chinese cosmology, the universe was created not by divinities but self-generated from the interplay of nature's basic duality: the active, light, dry, warm, positive, masculine yang and the passive, dark, cold, moist, negative yin. All things, animate and inanimate, and all circumstances were a combination of these fundamentals. The ultimate principle of the universe was the tao, "the way," and it determined the proper proportions of yin and yang in everything. Anything that altered the natural relation of yin to yang was considered bad, and right living consisted of carefully following the tao. If one observed the tao by moderation, equanimity, and morality, as taught in the Tao-te Ching, by Lao-tzu (sixth century B.C.), one would be impervious to disease and resistant to the ravages of aging; disregard of the tao led to illness, which was not so much a punishment for sin as the inevitable result of acting contrary to natural laws. However, illness also could be caused by forces beyond one's control: "Wind is the cause of a hundred diseases," and atmospheric conditions could upset the harmonious inner balance of the yang and yin. One had to be alert to this possibility and combat its effects as well as modify internal imbalances of the vital forces. Longevity and health were the rewards.…
Last year I took English Composition One through Itawamba Community College's online program. When I signed up for the class I was nervous that I would not do well. Many of my friends had told me that the class was mainly a writing class, and I would need to be a strong writer to do well in it. I have always loved writing, and my writing is typically strong. I had not had an English class that focused on writing in years though. Despite how I felt in the beginning, I ended the class with a grade I was proud of, I overcame my struggle with commas, and I learned that when I took the time to proofread papers, I was rather good at finding the little errors that would have otherwise been missed.…
