In this article by Samantha Masunaga, the popular food chain “Chipotle” is exposed for having a norovirus incident in a restaurant in Simi Valley. The restaurant had been subpoenaed for criminal investigation regarding an E. coli outbreak.There was also a large report from customers who had “contracted norovirus from eating at a Chipotle”. While E. coli outbreaks in food chains is not unique, it is still serious.

This article directly ties to the executive departments lesson we’ve been doing in class. We've learned about the departments and a little about what they're supposed to do, but we haven't looked at too many relatable, real world examples. I think the article was most helpful in the sense that it explained what the FDA handles.Their

    In the early 2010’s fast food, with health twists was popular. The population was becoming more worried and conscience about what they fed themselves and their families, and this, combined with the always-busy, modern-day society in need of quick meals, gives an opening for fast-food restaurants like Taco Time, Chipotle, and Taco Del Mar to spot light their greasy-burger-free, and sometimes organic, menus. In 2010 Chipotle released a commercial called “Scarecrow” showing an animated scarecrow witnessing the cruelness and fraud and of big food corporations, and then starting his own organic restaurant, which the audience assumes is Chipotle; all to the tune of “Pure Imagination” covered by Fiona Apple.     In the book, Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser discusses the problems that the nation is facing with fast food restaurants. Schlosser wrote this book because he was concerned with where the fast food industry was taking America. He voices his concern about the children and their health regarding meat bacteria, and the fat content of the food. He also mentions how potato farmers, cattle ranchers, and chicken raisers are suffering from the industry controlling prices too low. Another worry Schlosser has is how the meat packing factories for these restaurants treat their workers and ultimately how careful they are with the meat. There are many horrifying stories about the harsh injuries and severe chronic problems these immigrant workers experience everyday or suffer with for the rest of their lives from working under such dangerous conditions. Schlosser also informs his readers of how the meat is processed, from the killing of the cattle to the boxing of the meat and some of the unknown, surprising facts that are involved in the whole process. Another issue presented in this book is how cities are affected by the rapid growth of these fast food restaurants. Also, Schlosser interviews teenagers working at these restaurants and tells their stories of frequent robberies, occasional shootings and poor work conditions. Ultimately this book is geared to help the people of America realize that there is a serious problem with fast food restaurants and we need to start demanding better food.
