though the government make efforts to improve the condition of homeless people such as shelters, public housing, job training and so on. Eventually, I realized that it is because some of the homeless are not eager to go back to the normal life and they enjoy free things, and I think we cannot help them.
In my point of view, the homeless can divided into three categories. One category is a homeless who lost the ability to work, and the other one is a homeless who encountered a hard time and he/she forced to stay in the street. And I want to talk about the third category, which is a homeless who stayed in the street for a long time and enjoys the free stuff and no responsibility. The author encouraged us to help each other in the society, but if we help these homeless men, they will be more dependent on others rather than make their own effort to get the things they want. In addition, the author claimed that if people are kindness and willing to contribute, the society will be no more hungry and homeless. Indeed, we can give the homeless some foods or clothes, but it has a potential dangerous that the author’s family allows strangers to stay at their house. We know nothing about the strangers and we do not what they are going to do in the house. For example, if the strangers have no gratitude and stole the money from the house, would you allow them to stay? Also, we don't know how they will spend the money. They might spend the money on drug and alcohol, or buy the lottery.
As old saying goes: “Don't judge a book by its cover.” Before we decide to help other people, we must judge whether the person is worthy of help.
For those who are worthy of help, we can encourage them to work. A brilliant idea that I found is created by Christopher Awalt. He said: “Offer him a hard day's work for an honest wage, and see if he accepts. If he does, tell him you'll pay weekly, so that he will have to work for an entire week before he sees any money. If he still accepts, offer a permanent job, with taxes withheld and the whole shebang. If he accepts again, hire him.” This idea can motivate the homeless and guide them to go back to the normal life. Moreover, the people who cannot offer a job for a homeless, we need to respect them and we can give them some food or some books. Knowledge is powerful, if we give them some inspirational books, they might regain the confidence and come back to the normal life.
Overall, helping others is a virtue and we should help someone who is worthy of help. What's more, people live in harmony and construct a caring society together and I think our world will become better in the
future.
