Chuck has taken up a kind of residency at the Liberty Tree sharing the stage with many other well-knows Texas musicians like Buffalo Rogers, George Ensle, and Brad Boyer. I wanted to hear him play before he heads off on a month-long tour of England and Scotland the middle of July.

Louis, Missouri then headed for Austin. On a connecting flight to Austin out of Chicago, he happened to meet the legendary Texas musician Ray Bonneville. Hawthorne knew of Bonneville from the pages of No Depression.
“We traded contact information and Ray said, ‘why don’t you send me some of your songs,’ I had heard that a hundred times before, but the next day, I emailed him three or four songs,” said Hawthorne. “He emailed me back and said ‘let’s meet over coffee and discuss making your record.’ He kicked the door wide open for me. He told me he was going to start my second career.”
Hawthorne had planned to make custom furniture after his military service. When it became clear that he had a career ahead of him playing music, he financed his first album by selling the wood-working tools that he’d gathered.
He didn’t solicit donations ala Kick Starter or gofundme, but he ran into person after person interested in donating to the production. He also sold some guns, which shows up as a theme in one of his songs titled,”Welding Son of a Gun.”
