The Scio Township Hall was nearly silent when I entered. There were only a man and a woman sitting at a table on the one side of the meeting room. I was about to ask if I was in the right place, but before I could open my mouth, the woman greeted me and introduced herself as a member of the Land Preservation Commission (LPC). One by one, other commissioners started to trickle in, smoothly joining in on the conversation about ordinances presented at the Board meeting a few days prior. I wondered if I was supposed to just catch on. After a solid twenty minutes of casual talk, Alec Jerome, the Land chair, finally called to order. Roll call was conducted and the following commissioners were present: Archer Christian (secretary), Jim Crowfoot, Alec Jerome, David Read, and Barry Lonik (consultant to Commission), and one relatively new member. Apologies were received from Leslie Desmond and Bruce Manny. I was the only member of the public in attendance. Then the agenda was adopted and the May meeting minutes were approved.…

The council meeting began and I was immediately was struck by the many different individuals in attendance from all walks of life. While almost everyone in the building was there for a specific reason or issue, there was one tie to everyone: Money and the local economy. The Firefighters from the city of Huntsville were in attendance protesting the projected budget and their cut of that. A worker from the Mental Hospital in Huntsville gave a very logical plea to the Council about that funding of the mental institution. Many issues made…

One of the teachers took the podium addressing the school board with some concerns about her school having very few teachers. She told the board that the shortage of teachers meant that class sizes were large and the work load was heavy. She made the comment “if I look tired it’s because I am.” I was impressed by that statement because that teacher didn’t have to go around campus complaining instead, she went to the school board to let them know. Mary Jadlowski Assistant Superintendent discussed an AP program that allows high school students that qualify to start taking college courses before they graduate. Those were the most interesting things about the meeting in my opinion. Towards the end of the meeting President Dr. Olgletree discussed how they were going to spend their funds within the district and surrounding areas. I wasn’t really interested in that because I didn’t understand some of the things he was talking about. What was surprising is that after the teacher had been chosen to have her name on the new school almost everyone who was in the meeting had left excluding the Board of Education members. It seemed to me the audience cared about nothing else that was said because…

Example being our Region 4 picnic Saturday, August 26th, 2017 at Hulda Crooks park. I am so proud of each and every one of you. I remember serving as a president and it being such a stressful but rewarding opportunity. I see your clubs through social media and astonished by the level of commit and drive you have. It brings a smile to my face to see so much growth and confidence radiating from you all. As board you all will create life changing memories for members new and old. The meeting started off by the advisors discussing about the new mentorship program they are promoting to the EDN students. It’s like the Athletic Mentorship program where a EDN student who passed EDN 200 becomes a mentor for a student(s) who is either a first or second-year student that has yet to complete EDN 200. The mentors would guide the mentees on any questions they have on the EDN program, Taskstream, field experience, etc., and give them advices on what they’ve learned in the past to do in the first-level courses of the program. Then one of the advisors discussed what Teach First is and welcome anybody who is a first-generation student to come to the meetings. They discuss on upcoming service opportunities the club is going to take…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

After the introduction the minutes from the last meeting were read by the group’s treasurer, this was the first role I could identify in the group. The treasurer took the task role of facilitator. After the reading of the minutes the leader asked for comments. One member asked if there could be another vote on changing the meeting time from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm, she started stating why and the treasurer cut her off by saying we put that issue to vote last week and it was passed to remain 5:30. For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…

I had Many reservations about doing this assignment. I initially felt I was inappropriate for me to attend a meeting, when I have never had a problem with addiction. I felt that going to this meeting would be intruding on their healing processes, almost as if I was using them as lab rats, to further my own education. However, my opinion of this changed after expressing these concerns to a friend who is a recovering addict. They told me there is no reason to feel awkward, or guilty about going and observing, because I’m not going there for a negative reason, I’m going to learn, so that one day I can also assist in a person’s recover, if that’s the profession I choose.…

When I first learned that I would be observing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting, I had several ideas on how it would actually go since I have never observed a meeting on a student. I had pictured in my mind that the meeting would be in a quiet room with a really long table and it would be two groups, the parents and the student and the other group would be the teachers, negotiating a contract. I also had pictured in my mind that the meeting would be very confrontational with one side deciding on something and the other side arguing that this decision was not sufficient enough. Little did I know this IEP meeting I would be observing would turn out completely different than what I pictured in my mind.…

Rebecca Brush attended Delaware Valley School board meeting held on, October 20, 2016, at 7 o'clock pm. The first major issue discussed was the results from multiple test scores and what direction they were going. We went through all of the elementary school's test results given to us by the first and secondary education chairmen and women, Dr. James Purcell, Dr. Peg Schaffer, and Dr. Gina Vitacco-Vives. They explained after installing a new curriculum the test scores had skyrocketed. For the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment test the district was at 74.9 while the state was down at 60.4 for English. Mathematics was at 53.2 for the district and 42.5 for the state. Science was a whopping 83.1 for the district and only a 67.0 for the state. The…
