Have you ever seen someone somewhere and said, “Where do I know that person from?” On September 23, 2010, my classmates and I attended a Huntsville City Council regular meeting held in the City Council Chambers. I expected to see businessmen, politicians and other white-collar individuals from around the city. I expected to be bored and not hear anything interesting. One thing I learned very early was always judge first-hand.
Do not go on what you think. I realized early in that there were a few familiar faces. Pastor Harold Goodloe, pastor of the New Life Seventh Day Adventist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, did the invocation. I was surprised to have a fellow Adventist participating in such a public government event. The council meeting began and I was immediately was struck by the many different individuals in attendance from all walks of life. While almost everyone in the building was there for a specific reason or issue, there was one tie to everyone: Money and the local economy. The Firefighters from the city of Huntsville were in attendance protesting the projected budget and their cut of that. A worker from the Mental Hospital in Huntsville gave a very logical plea to the Council about that funding of the mental institution. Many issues made

Fowler and Fowler Enterprises. They were brought to the City Council for suspension of license for lack of tax payments. I looked up and actually knew the business and the gentleman. I had supported the business in the past and had good things to say about Neon Sound Systems. However, he was standing in front of the Council explaining why he cannot pay the over $2,000 in back taxes. His accountant did most of the talking. They explained to the Council that they were barely in business and blamed the economy. I felt the Council was going to be hard on the gentleman. The Council instead showed uncommon

Henry Levine’s candidate’s speech consisted of primarily cognitive context only when outlining your prior achievements, which he says you could have used to help the city. This benefits Henry Levine’s speech by illustrating to voters that you are smart and had the knowledge to help give the Oakland people the changes they wanted during your time in office, but you did not accomplish. Although the candidate’s speech is primarily emotive when Henry Levine is trying to illustrate how you have failed at changing the city. Some examples of this are “Why then do we, the upstanding residents of Oakland, find our streets littered with young and disgruntled vagrants calling for anarchy” And “We need to look no further than the house of cards built…

I have always loved my county fair in Tulare, CA. I love seeing all the different animals and aspects of agricultural together in one place. My most positive thought of my fair is educating outsiders about my animals. This was my first time walking thru the Fresno fair so it was a little different not being involved in the dairy barn. I was able to view the fair as an outsider in some way. This let me realize some major aspects and some things I have never realized about the fair.…

In the fall of 1968 in Chicago, Patricia Devine and Dick Vision, members of a church organization called the Concerned Citizens of Lincoln Park approached me to see if I could help them bring people to an upcoming housing meeting of the Lincoln Park Community Conservation Council. At the time, I was still president of a loose knit street gang, the Young Lords. I had recently come out of jail and wanted to get back with my girlfriend and daughter and settle down. During the day I was studying for my G.E.D. while also working as a janitor at the Argonne National Laboratory in an ex-offender program. It was not an easy task to get a group of relatively undisciplined young people to attend a formal, political meeting. Convincing them bruised not only my ego, but my face. But when the evening of the meeting arrived, about 40 young people from the neighborhood showed up.…

On Sunday, March 6th, I went to an AA meeting in the Heights Vietnam Veterans Memorial Building between Manhattan and Summit Avenues in NJ, Jersey City. The meeting started around 10:30 AM and ended around 11:30 AM. Before the meeting, lots of coffee, tea and donuts were served to the people. There were about 50 people that showed up to the meeting, 35 of them were males and the other 15 were females. Most of them were either old or middle aged. The meeting consisted of a podium which had about five rows of metal folding chairs facing it. On the wall behind the podium to the left of it, was a list of the twelve steps and to the right of it, was a list of the twelve traditions. The meeting began with someone reciting the twelve steps and then with the introduction of new members. After that someone else comes up to the podium, but this time with a calendar in his hands and he goes over the upcoming events. The meeting ended with everyone quietly listening to Billy’s and George’s life stories.…

Jennifer Lane As I've said before; you can attend all the meetings you want but nothing will change. I sit in that room and get an utter lack of disrespect from Folsom's career council members all because I want to be involved and I have a difference of opinion. I'll gladly continue to watch the meetings at home (after work) and take action outside the chambers in ways that reach for more folks than the meetings do. Your absolutely right, you are a lone wolf in the those commission meetings. These decisions are planned and decided well before they get to you. They use you as political fodder; just as they do to anyone who doesn't see it there way. We have to remove the council to end the outside influences effecting this city. I am leading…

Now onto more important things like the recent movie we have been watching and our latest chapter concerning religion. I find it be to fairly interesting that people are so simply chosen to be this significant organizer for such a religiously distinct event for a whole year. I believe that is a unique way of nominating someone so that they may show their worth. Perhaps not someone’s worth, but their responsibility level and connection to God. In a way it’s asking if they, and the people that help them, have what it takes to organize such an event. I think it is a slight burden and a really special honor at the same time and yet I know I would not be able to bring together such an occasion or even organize it properly because of its vast extent. Pulling together a group project and a power point on the other head? Well that is a…
