Affirmative action is the practice of improving educational and job opportunities of groups of people who have been treated unfairly in the past due to their race, sex, etc. In the US the effort was to improve the educational and employment opportunities of women and men of minority. Following the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, affirmative action was designed to counteract the lingering effects of generations of past discrimination.
I am not sure what I think about whether or not Affirmative Action should be abolished. I do believe that we should be doing more to try and improve discrimination. If we didn’t do anything to try and improve discrimination among the educational and job opportunities this world would be run by hateful people. I can understand where people would believe that it is racist towards whites. I don’t believe any type of racism should happen. Affirmative Action is for all minorities, not just for blacks, Hispanics, etc. This includes whites as well.
On the other hand I can also see the flip side of this. Would I really want to work for a place that only hired me because they had to? Should companies have to hire people of a certain race to meet quotas? I believe that companies should hire people of all races as we live in a country of equal opportunity. I found some cases of Affirmative Action. I found them interesting.
Fisher v University of Texas This is a case which concerns the affirmative action of an admissions policy of a Texas University. The Supreme Court voided the lower appellates court ruling in favor of the University. The Supreme Court ruled that the Fifth Circuit court of appeals has to reconsider the case. The University considers race as one of their factors for admission.
Schuette v Coalition This case is about a University in Michigan that banned racial preferences in the admissions process. This case is still under review I believe. From what
