The unity of a nation is important and America demonstrated to the world how a country could withstand secession. Furthermore, the Civil War emphasised the strength of the democracy. The Civil War became the first step toward a United States without slavery. Although the costs of the war were devastating, its benefits that were only fully noticeable long after it ended, paved the way for a stronger nation and helped form the nation today.
