Crime Data Comparison
Crime is something that occurs throughout the world. To some people it is an incident that adds stress to one’s life, and to others, they see it as a way of life. Over the last years, different areas of the United States have been affected by crime. The Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Program is a nationwide program that gathers statistical information from nearly 18,000 agencies that report criminal data on crimes that have been brought to their attention or reported voluntarily (The Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). This instrument is useful for finding the rates of incidents, help determine what factors might explain the differences when comparing different areas, and how the rates have changed over time. This paper will cover the different crime rates of Honolulu, Hawaii, and New York, New York, using the most recent data taken from the FBI’s UCR. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports on a variety of crimes committed in different areas, and ones with violent crimes, which appear to have the most incidents each year. Violent crimes include such acts as forcible rape, robbery, murder/non-negligent manslaughter, and aggravated assault. In Honolulu and New York, the populations are completely different so it is must easier to look at the percentages, proportions, and numbers for comparison.
Honolulu vs. New York In the years of 2009 and 2010, Honolulu had reported fewer incidents of violent crimes compared to New York. In 2009, according to the FBI, Honolulu had a population of 907,124 individuals with a violent crime rate of over 2,537 occurrences, whereas New York had an estimated population of 8,400,907 individuals with a violent crime rate of over 46,357 occurrences.
