Question:
Affirmative action was designed to reduce discrimination and issues guidelines to businesses, government department’s schools and other types of companies that are designed to encourage diversity and reduce discrimination based on ethnic backgrounds and skin color. This policy was originally a method used to counteract the impact that racial discrimination has cause. Although some may think that affirmative action is no longer necessary I find it to be the opposite. Most want also to believe that with an increasingly diverse modern society. What this policy does is make sure that a clear advantage is afforded those students who are considered as disadvantage students to gain higher education. Affirmative action is a fair compensation so it seems for centuries of racial oppression and slavery. When it comes to the workplace affirmatives action gave ethnic minorities a chance at proving themselves in the workplace to be just as capable an employee as the Caucasian worker. Some people consider some of the cons being that this policy is hard to remove once it has been put in place. Some even believe that it gives ethnic minorities a very unfair advantage because of the color of their skin. It is said that affirmative action lower an institute of higher learning’s standards of a minority students backgrounds when applying for entry, so it is thought that they are less than likely to try to excel at their fullest potential, and less likely to cope with the demands of the school so it is thought. It is felt that success achieved because of this policy is less of an achievement than success gained through hard work and persistence. It is basically a system designed to set whatever was considered morally wrong to be set right. Some of the justifications for this policy are the diversity rationale this idea is that people from diverse backgrounds bring so many different complimentary skills to the jobs that they do that seems to enriches the way we work and learn. The negative to this is that some say there is no benefit to a diverse workplace or schools socially or otherwise those in opposition to affirmative action’s claim that we should never equate social benefits with or on the basis of immutable characteristics like race, on gender claiming that this action is already a form of discriminating against Caucasians even though historically all forms of discretionary practice were used against women and people of color especially the African American and the American Indian, Chinese, and other people of color.
