Classical Concert Review
On July 18, 2017 at 7:30PM, I was given the opportunity to attend a classical concert at Princeton University. This concert was part of a series called Summer Chamber Concerts; a summer event where different classical concerts are held featuring different musicians. This particular concert was featured the Lysander Trio. This trio consists of Itamar Zorman on the violin, Liza Stepanova on the piano, and Michael Katz on the cello. These classically trained musicians blew me away with their performance. They started the night with Intermezzo from Goyescas which was written by Enrique Cassado. As beautiful as it was, the violin and cello took over this performance, which left me craving for more piano. They then continued with a set of pieces titled Around a Cauldron written by Gilad Cohen. I personally enjoyed this and was amazed at how all the pieces fit together to tell a beautiful story. All three instruments balanced each other perfectly. The piano especially was …show more content…
One particular man was wearing a black tee with tan cotton chino pants. Another woman wore a black and white sleeveless shirt with your typical jeans. Even though the audience's attire was not as noticeable, the appreciation for the artists and their performance definitely was. While a piece was being played, the audience grew so silent and emerged in the music that you could hear every detail and every note played. After it was obvious that a piece was done being performed, the audience clapped in much appreciation. There was no yelling of “Woo!” and so on. I did happen to notice that when an artist introduced a piece, sometimes he would make a small joke and the audience would laugh. However, this did not affect how seriously the performance was still taken. At the end of the repertoire, the musicians as they bowed, were given a standing motivation which much

The concert that I chose to attend was the Gramophone award winners, Pavel Haas Quartet. Veronika Jaruskova, Marek Zxiebel, Pavel Nikl, and Peter Jarusek were the musicians. They were all very talented. Their movements were amazing and no matter the difficulty, they stayed in time with one another. The songs they chose to perform were Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50 by the composer Prokofiev, Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 “Serioso” by Beethoven, and Quartet No. 5, Sz. 102 by Bartok. All these pieces were amazing both in difficulty and sound.…

To begin my review of this concert, I would like to first briefly talk about foundation history of Boston Symphony Orchestra. This orchestra was founded in 1881 by Henry Lee Higginson. The first conductor was George Henschel who was a famous bastion as well as an orchestra conductor. He was also a close friend of famous composer, Johannes Brahms. The current conductor of the orchestra is Andris Nelsons who is also the music director-designate of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. The BSO (Boston Symphony Orchestra) plays most of its concert at Boston’s Symphony hall and in the summer, it performs at Tanglewood. I went to Boston Symphony Orchestra concert on the 7th of…

Personally notable movements from the first piece of the program, Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 2, are Andante and Vivace. Pappone, “lauded as a ‘first rate’ violinist by Maestro Lorin Maazel” and founder of the non-profit Delius Music Academy (Mallory Concert Series Program), executed technique perfection from my hearing. His pianoforte was divine and every note softly washed over the audience with pitch precision. Moving from the second to the third movement there was an exaggeration of sad drama. Even by looking at the instrumentalists faces it was clear this was far from an upbeat movement; as the three instruments meshed together in a gloomy way to match the weather. The end of the selection seemed to involve a…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

Butterfly Dances was probably my favorite from that entire night. It is a set of variations from traditional Chinese folk songs which Root had expanded into viable melodies. It sounded to be in ABA form, but also seemed to be in symphonic form. It was very beautiful. You could hear the fluttering of butterfly wings from the wind section of the band. The last movement was more dark than the rest. It had a forte and mezzo forte dynamic, as well as there was some ritardando and crescendo in the piece. The tempo changed between vivace, allegro and andante. I really enjoyed it. Thomas Root really got way into conducting. He was jumping and flailing his arms all over, which was rather entertaining.…

The Washburn University Recital was held in the White Concert Hall. It featured 6 different ensembles, each having their own compositions. The program began with the euphonium horn with piano accompaniment. The second performance included the flute with piano accompaniment. The third performance included the tuba with piano accompaniment. The fourth performance was a male singer with accompaniment from the piano. The fifth performance was the euphonium horn with piano accompaniment. The last performance was an ensemble that included the flute, french horn, oboe, and two clarinets. I really enjoyed how eclectic the performances were, and the different styles of music kept my interest throughout every performance.…

Upon initial observation of my surroundings I could see that the audience is quiet and well mannered, patiently waiting for the performers to make their appearance. It was orderly and sophisticated and the majority of the audience was dressed formally to suit the occasion. The concert began promptly at 6pm, when the conductor Elaine AuBuchon entered the stage with the full theater clapping. She greeted all the audience and started the concert formally. As the performers entered they were greeted with applause and bow to the audience before they take their positions. Applause was also given when the musicians complete a…

On October 19, 2013 I sought out to listen to some classical music for my review for class. It was a pleasure to have found the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra at the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Oviedo, FL, a part of St. Luke’s concert series of 2013-14 that has been held in the last nineteen years here in Oviedo, FL. This free event that’s held each year at St. Luke church holds about three hundred people in there sanctuary, everything in the décor speak to your imagination Lutheran church. It was very nice it reminded me of a small concert hall. The orchestra fill the whole area were the choir usually sit. Christopher Wilkins, he conductor along within a full orchestra and Rimma Bergeron–Langlois the violinist, who all played four great suites from the genius of Georges Bizet, the piece from L’Arlesienne, Carmen suite, and Carmen fantasies, and Symphony in C’ that took you back in time. This classical music from the romantic era was breath taking.…

The Oglethorpe University Singers and the Oglethorpe Chorale performed the concert at Conant Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 1, 2015, at 8 pm. The concert setting was smaller than the other venues we visited for previous concerts. The room was semi-lit, and classmates filled the concert hall. The concert conventions were not surprising as we have attended other concerts, and the conventions were the same. The Oglethorpe Singer and the Oglethorpe Chorale performance was excellent, they were in sync, and everyone did great. It was my first concert, and I was very impressed because they sounded like professional musicians.…

First on the program was Grand Quartet in E Minor by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832). Kuhlau was a concert pianist and a composer of the Danish opera; he composed over 200 works in his lifetime. The first work the ensemble preformed was Andante Maestoso, the intro to the song was very soft, and it had a sense of a nature vibe to the melody. The pitch then proceeded to escaladed higher; at points during the work it was changing from all four flutes playing in unison to just one stand out flute and the rest in a base beat. I really enjoyed the change of pace throughout the song and how one flute stood out showed off that person’s unique set of skills that maybe differs them from the rest of the ensemble. The work ended in a very fast paced rhythm and there was no insinuation that the work was going to end because there was no build up to the finale of the work. I really enjoyed this piece but the only down fall was it was very long and none of the other songs in the ensemble were nearly that long.…

Unlike the first concert I went to a few months ago this one actually grabbed my attention. Every ensemble was very talented and something different to bring to the table. The many songs performed in the concert were all very well put together pieces. Though out of the eleven songs played I picked three of which I really enjoyed the most. All three songs were performed by the first ensemble directed by Mark Buselli. The first song was That Old Black Magic. The song contained a brief saxophone solo that was played very swiftly. I found the song particularly interesting because it was…

The concert was labeled on youtube as a Bangladesh concert. The musical artists played Indian music, and there didn’t seem to be a composer. Every one just seemed to know how to play together. By being an active listener I learned that different cultures sometimes have very different musical styles. Most musical styles touch on all elements of SHMRGO. It was really neat to see how differently Indian music is put together. It’s obvious that they’re extremely talented musicians because they have to incorporate twice as many notes (semi-tones and quarter-tones) than whats typical to us, and they all did it so well. The type of instruments I think were used were the chordophones sitar, santoor, ektara, and the getnu. Also, I think either a bansuri, a venu, or a fiti was used (aerophones); and I’m almost positive that the dhad was played percussion wise. I think these instruments were played, but there were definitely a lot more instruments played than just these. The mood of concert definitely seemed like it was met to interpret happiness and excitement. As I mentioned, there was no one composer. However, the artists did communicate with each other through body language, and that was really interesting to watch play out.The Bangladesh concert performance was definitely interesting and educational, but for the most part it wasn’t pleasing to my ears, simply because I’m not accustomed to the style of music that was played. I completely respect the music that was played, and I honor that it’s different from the music that I listen to. To be frank, the pieces sounded like organized chaos. However, over it time it may become something I’d listen to for fun. Watching this concert definitely made me curious as to what different cultures think when they hear musical styles that are common to…

The Pianist Daniel Lau was very good and I was able to sit in the second row sort of behind him, so that I could see all the music that he would play and see his hands and feet very clearly. I noticed how fast most of the songs were and that he was able to play each song with ease. I noticed some of the songs required a lot of sheet music because he spent almost a minute a few times to simply fold out the music that he was using for the next song. I also noticed how he flipped the page during each song while still playing a lot with one hand he switched the page and then contnued from there. The foot pedals were fun to watch because he would smoothly dance from one pedal to another as the sound of the music differed very minutely.…
