Women in computer science would like to see more representation of women in computer science fields since there is a lack of females in those fields. Also, in nerd culture there has been an increase in diversity. This is due fact that there is more diverse characters in things nerds are interested in, like comic books. In “What Color Is Your Superhero?” Adam Serwer discusses how comics and its audience have become more diverse. Serwer writes, “Ethnic diversity is worming its way into the panels of superhero comic books and into the legions of people who love them.” Because new superheroes are becoming more diverse, the people who are interested in are becoming more diverse. This example points to a solution in fixing the racial gap in STEM fields; if there is more representation of people of color in STEM related fields, other people of color will become interested in it. Children and teenagers gain inspiration from television shows and movies, and if there were more shows featuring people color in STEM jobs then more children will become interested in going into STEM…
Morrow’s professional contributions have been and continue to be filled with a desire to help students as well as focused on mentoring young professionals. During her tenure at Gallaudet she was involved in mentoring junior faculty, teaching assistants and student laboratory teachers. Her desire to nurture and help young people continued into her retirement as she is now serving as a STEM Program Director for the DC Metropolitan area HBCU Alumni Alliance. Objectives of the STEM workshop are to provide opportunities for the students to conduct experiments with graduates of HBCUs who are currently working in STEM-related occupations. In addition, the students have an opportunity to talk to the scientists to learn more about their STEM profession and to develop mentoring opportunities. This program has received broad acclaim and praise for the variety of STEM areas covered, the quality of the…
Jacques Steinberg witnessed hispanics who have tried hard in school, but not accepted or treated differently due to movies and social media starting stereotypes. He proved this by following students of different ethnics to prove their differences. … Jobs was influenced to write his speech to influence the graduating class of 2005 to find what they love to do and let them control their life instead of doing what other people think they should do. Jobs said, And the only way to do great work is to love what you do,... Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it…”…
I hope all is well, I am writing this email to inquire about next steps after my track is complete in June. I have been in my seasonal supervisor role for a little over 2 months and it has been a great learning and development experience and I am overall, enjoying the process. It is hard to believe that it will be a year since I began this development process and I am even more grateful for the opportunity now, than 10 months ago, because of the platform that was granted and contributed to my growth as a leader. Dana Leake has been an exceptional mentor through this process in providing me with great tools to succeed and continue to grow as a leader. Now that I am less than 2 months away from the end of the development track, I am hoping to…

October 29, 1929, some may know it as Black Tuesday, others know it as an important date in history but those who lived it know it as the day that changed their lives for many years to come. James J. Braddock said, “I have to believe that when things are bad i can change them.”. When the Great Depression began, Braddock lost all his money, job. But his hope and pride was something he had never fell short of. His family supported him no matter what, never lost their hopes on him. This helped Braddock a lot while he was fighting. At hard times he thought of his family and remembered the hard conditions and times they have been through, his moral at fighting increased. He had pride and hope for everything. H e never gave up on himself and his family.…

Women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors exemplify the gender gap. “Let me tell you about the trouble with girls. You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticize them, they cry,” said Nobel Laureate, Tim Hunt. (Amarante) Hunt believes that women should be segregated from men in the laboratory as they are a distraction to science. Although Hunt received backlash for his comments, it provides an example of the gender biases affecting women in STEM majors.…
According to research, found that African-American and Hispanic girls say they have an interest in STEM, but have less exposure, less adult support, lower academic achievement, and are more aware of gender barriers. Also, once an African-American student is identified as low performing, they are tracked from primary through secondary education, and placed in lower-level courses (DeSena & Ansalone, 2009; “Teaching Inequity”, 1989). Furthermore, social science has found internalizing gender stereotypes of being insufficient, leads low performance in STEM courses (Girls Scouts of the USA/Girl Scout Research Institute,…
But meeting the needs of Latino students requires more predictions. The poor state of post-secondary education for Latino students is one of the American nation’s most important challenges. “Right now, what’s happening is that we’re fixing our higher education institutions like we patch the blacktop on our roads, a pothole at a time”, said Lee Shulman, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement if Teaching. America has the opportunity to see all of their young people as the future of their country and more importantly, dedicate the same resources and attention to them that they have in the past generations. The time has come to effect a bigger change at the national level.…

It is known that, “The first established death penalty laws date as far back as the Eighteenth Century B.C. in the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon, which codified the death penalty for 25 different crimes” (“Introduction to the Death Penalty”). In the seventh century B.C. the death penalty was a part of the Draconian Code of Athens while the death penalty was the only punishment for any crime. During this time, the death penalty came to the extent of drowning, beating to death, crucifixion, impalement, and being buried alive (“Introduction to the Death Penalty”). In the tenth century, Britain began using hanging as the usual method for punishment. William the Conqueror made it a law in the eleventh century that no executions could be…
1. Why are you interested in serving as a peer mentor again? I am interested in serving as a peer mentor again next year because of the experiences and opportunities that I have had so far. Looking back on my experiences in Econ 110, I appreciated the guidance I received from the class and from my peer mentors. I am excited to continue to help the incoming freshman class adjust to college by preparing them for life as an Agricultural Business student. More specifically preparing them for the CALS career fair, working with each student of their four-year plans, and being available for any questions they may have.…
