Moral of the story is, technology has some disadvantages and technology could potentially take over one’s life, or it can distract one from what is important. Lack of Face to face Communication
With text messages, emails, and over the phone communications, the need for Face to face communication has tremendously decreased.
“The internet seems to be a new outlet where people can express thoughts without leaving their homes. This also leads to a decline of citizens engaging in public affairs to shape and promote their community’s wellbeing. Thus, this trend that lacks participation is not a positive outlook for the development of democratic involvement” (Mueller, p.1). Although technological communication is convenient, this affects many communities and families in a negative light. In the movie click, when Michael discoveries the universal remote he becomes attached to the remote control, and he spends more time traveling. Interactions with his family decreases, his wife leaves him for it, his father is deceased without him acknowledging his death, and his children drift away from him. This shows one how crucial communication is to families and communities. In today’s society, this issue is occurring in families and communities. Except, the universal remote is gadgets such as, cell phones, landlines, and computers. People are attached to their electronics and they often forget to communicate with friends and families Face to …show more content…
face.
Miscommunications
“ When texting, emailing, and when using social networks, one can’t tell the person’s genuine emotion. One can’t see their facial expressions, or they can’t hear their tone. All your left with is words and one can only judge the individual based on their words. In addition, when texting or emailing words can be misleading. “Colleges and universities have rules on the use of social media. Different programs prohibit posting about the program in any way. At times, these kinds of posts can result in being removed from the program or college. Students in athletics are also expected to only post things that will reflect positively on them and their team, coaches and school” (Isaacs). When one writes a post on social network sites, people often misinterpret the words. Whereas, when one communicates in a Face to face manner, then it is easier to comprehend the point. In the movie Click, Michael encounters this same issue, Michael miscommunicates to his wife and kids that he does not have adequate time to spend with them. Michael gets entangled to his new lavish life style as the co-owner of the company. When in reality, he does have time to have dinner with them. The miscommunication mainly came from the remote control; the remote control accelerates time, and rushes family dinners. In his wife and kids perspective, when they have family dinners, time seems to go by in a matter of seconds. This is the effect of the remote.
Distractions in Schools
When it comes to school, technology is predominately useful. Students often use computers for research, writing papers, and so forth. But technology in schools has disadvantages as well. Students are often on their phones texting, instead of participating in class. In addition, students are easily tempted to use social networks, surf the web, watch movies, and play online games when they utilize computers in schools. This can deter students from learning. This can lead to problems like falling behind in school. “Many schools have different rules on how to use social media in schools. Some ban it altogether while others will use it only in certain circumstances” (Isaacs,p.1). Banning social media in schools is a brilliant idea, this reduces the amount of distractions students face. Students will be able to focus more on their academics.
Distracted Driving
“Each day in the United States, more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,153 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention).
Devices like cell phones and GPS cause heaps of crashes. Multiple people drive while texting, emailing, or surfing the web. People don’t realize the damage this habit can cause to society, nonetheless, it’s serious and states across the United States, are examining ways to decrease these crashes that are caused by technology. Below is a poll, which shows the causes for crashes, the number one reason crashes occur is due to cell
phones.
This paper has extended my outlook of technology, technology is a great tool for life overall. However, technology has disadvantages. Technology causes a great deal of miscommunication, lack of Face to face communication, distractions in school settings, and distractions while driving. Many people don’t take into consideration the issues that come with technology. When we think of technology we think of it from a positive aspect. We don’t necessarily examine the problems that come with it.
