Clinical Decision Making Skill Of The Nurse During RRT Activation
In every hospital setting, nurses play a vital role in patient safety by monitoring patients for signs and symptoms of deterioration. The rapid response teams (RRT) main purpose is to reduce cardiac arrest, prevent failure to rescue and decrease mortality rates of the hospital. To react to a sudden deterioration, a nurse must use their critical thinking and clinical decision making skills in order to provide the best outcome for the patient. Clinical decision making involves coming up with a nursing diagnosis and choosing appropriate nursing interventions. A study was done to determine the association between the decision making skill of the nurse during RRT activation and the frequency of RRT activation. Nurses who used analytical decision
making skills activated the RRT twice as often as the nurse who did not use analytical decision making. Analytical decision making skill involves data collection, hypothesis formation about what is likely to happen and coming up with a decision on how to react to the situation. Increased activation of RRT is connected to decreased mortality rates in hospital. The study also showed that nurses who used analytical decision making skills tended to be older with many years of hospital experiences (Parker, 2014) In an emergency setting, clinical decision making can be a very difficult process. Nurse have to have good critical thinking and clinical decision making skill in order to improve patient outcome and reduce the cost of hospital stay. Clinical decision making skill also includes communicating these decisions verbally and writing a valid documentation.
