Clinical Reflective Essay
This week we had a clinical make up day in Sim lab. I learned how to give injections, oral medications, and put in Urinary Catheters. It was interesting to learn how to give subcutaneous and Intramuscular injections. I was nervous at first, because giving injections is a different technique then drawing blood. It was a great experience. I learned that I should give subcutaneous injections in the abdomen region about 45-90 degrees and this site is great for administering Insulin. It is important to alternate the sites to reduce the risk of scar tissue development as well. I also learned to give intramuscular injection at 90 degrees in the deltoid, vastus lateralis, and ventrogluteal muscles. I loved the distribution of oral medications to my patient. I was a bit awkward talking to a manikin, but it was a great experience. It is pivotal to remember the 7 rights of administration, because it can cause a medication error that can potential harm the patient. …show more content…

The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. My experiences engaging with the communities that I have lived inspire me to become a physician dedicated to finding the most effective ways to communicate with my patients and improve their health outcomes in different types of environments. I first worked in health care locally during the summer after my sophomore year of college when I volunteered at the People’s Community Clinic. It was there that I got my first look at direct health interventions through making health education materials in the…

During a two week mission trip to Trujillo, Peru I volunteered in a medical clinic. My life purpose; becoming a nurse, was revealed to me while comforting children with distended abdomens due to malnutrition and contaminated water, as well as elders with crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis. This heartbreaking experience, gave me a cultured view of global healthcare needs. My goal as a nurse is to bring joy and comfort to patients. A girl from my highschool was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma at age 14 and throughout her treatment, she spoke so highly of the nurses that made an impact in her short life. I wish to provide this kind of meaningful compassion to a patient one day.…

The social stigma that comes with mental illness is often more disabling than the illness itself. The labels attributed to those who are mentally ill are not only discriminating but also isolating; those perceived less than able are kept and ignored. However, there are organizations that advocates and helps to integrate these most vulnerable individuals into our society, and that is what made this clinical rotation at Friendship special.…

This is a reflective account on administering medication. I have asked and confirmed permission from a service user whom I will refer to as Mrs.N. At the start of my shift I would receive a handover from a senior member of staff who has administered and monitored the medication the service user would require during the night. We would together check all MARS sheets were marked ans the medication count was correct. I would receive the drug trolley keys from the previous shifts senior member of staff and keep them on my person throughout my shift as these keys should not be giver to any other member of staff. Before I get ready to administer any medication I would check Mrs N's care plan for any changes or medical professional visits that have happened which may indicate a change in her medication. The drug trolley is kept in a locked room that has a temperature that does not exceed 25 degrees Celsius and this is noted on the daily temperature monitoring sheet. The trolley itself is locked and chained securely to the wall. I would prepare medication cups, glasses and fresh water. I have removed the drug trolley from the store ans taken it a distance not far from…

There is need for me to fully engage in new experiences and learning opportunities, this will enable me acquire skills in making quick decisions. For example, Sharples (2011) suggests that in times of emergency, making competent decisions while under pressure as a person or as a team is crucial in saving a patient’s life. This may not be possible if I am only using my dominant reflective style of learning, but rather a combination of both reflective and activist style of learning will enable me learn in such complex clinical environment. New experiences and opportunities can be explored by asking my mentor to expose me to different clinical settings with different challenges as this will expand my clinical knowledge and skills. The nursing…

Walking into Roosevelt Elementary the first day of clinicals was one of the most overwhelming experiences I faced over the course of the semester. I was a brand-new nursing student with not a lot of experience, who lacked confidence and feared the thought of working with children. This past few weeks of clinicals have been a completely different experience. Over the past nine weeks I believe I have grown exponentially with my skills as a nursing student. I am confident in working with clients of all age ranges, utilizing therapeutic communication, educating clients on health care topics and hands on skills including vital signs, blood glucose, vision screening and peripheral artery disease screening. I believe the two biggest changes I made…

Administering medication requires the understanding of how the medication is to enter the body such as orally, transdermal, or intravenous. It also requires the knowledge of when the medication needs to be administered, the possible side effects, and its toxicity. Doctors, nurses, and a few other professionals are trained and licensed to safely give medication and it is imperative they do it without harm. Training for professionals also includes proper storage, handling, and disposal of the drugs. Nursing responsibilities for drug administration includes the Three Checks and the Rights of Medication Administration. The nurse also has the responsibility of the medication to be given. Before administering any medication, rather the medication is known or unfamiliar it is the issuer responsibility to know about or why the medication is to be given. Knowing the mode of action will ensure that the medication given is appropriate for the patient’s diagnosis. It’s also the nurse responsibility to know the side effects of and the contraindications for the medication, as well as the antagonist, safe dosage range, interaction, with other drugs, precautions to take before administering, and the proper administration techniques.…
