College Admissions Essay: Never Give Up
“Never give up”. This has been my mantra since ninth grade. Whether it was in school, sports, dance or just life in general. During elementary and middle school as well as in the beginning of high school, academics was a serious struggle for me. School was a constant uphill battle. I always had this feeling that I wasn't good enough or smart enough. In classes I got anxiety that teachers would call on me, and I would incorrectly answer the question. I felt I would embarrass myself if I got the question wrong. This, in turn led to self doubt. I would compare myself to other students who often complained if they got a 85 on a test. I always felt satisfied if I got a 85 because that grade of 85 was like a hundred to me. I was often ashamed of
my grades, even though I had worked my hardest and done my best.
As a freshman, I began to notice that I often got distracted in the classroom. Towards the end of ninth grade, a teacher discussed my distractibility with me. He wanted to help me overcome this hurdle and came up with putting me on ADHD medicine. Before I knew it, my grades improved. During my sophomore year, I was on the Honor Roll. In my junior year, I made the High Honor Roll. I was able to get good grades and even managed to get a 93 on my US History Regents, which was a monumental improvement for me. I never thought that I would be capable of getting such great grades. I never gave up on working hard in school and was able to do better than I ever thought I could.
I will always be grateful to my teacher. Mr. Blanco, who believed in me and figured out a way to help me become a successful academic student. If it was not for him, I would still be struggling with school.
