College and Casual Conversations
The difference between college class conversation and casual conversation with a friend is that during a casual conversation with a friend an individual do not have to think before he or she speaks. Even though this may be the best decision to avoid confrontation, most friends speak their mind to one another with no hesitation or filter. Whether their opinion is negative or positive, they can speak to each other as they please. With that being said, a conversation within a classroom has to be well thought out with caution. An individual should never want the others to feel disrespected during any communication. During class discussion each person should give the same respect and attention as they would intend to have.

A large part of my role is to promote appropriate behaviour and respect for others; all students are told on induction day that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated within the college. One of the easiest ways I have found to promote this is to model my own behaviour to show students how they should behave within the college environment, I always speak to the students politely, addressing them correctly and I listen to them when they are speaking, rather than speak over them or stop them in mid sentence. I have found that by creating a space where people feel…

Having good communication skills will help us to develop better relationships, especially with younger people. Some students who lack in confidence may find it hard to communicate at all with us, so if we come across to that pupil in a positive and gentle manner they are more likely to open up to us and talk. We would not like to be spoken to in a negative way so therefore we should also be careful of how we speak to others too.…

I recall reading an article about trigger words a couple of months ago. The article was titled Killing the Conversation in College Classrooms. In in this article they discussed trigger words and their effects on academic discussions in the classroom. They argued that professors are watering down their lectures so not to offend anyone and students are avoiding upsetting discussions because they are unable to handle the stresses that go along with the controversial topics. This article was obviously written from a leftist position because they failed to realize the actual problems. I cannot say I have ever met a student that is so triggered or upset by the use of words that they cannot engage in conversation about their meaning. Also, have you ever heard of a professor being afraid to share his opinions for fear of offending someone? I have sat through too many political rants to know that that argument is simply not true. In reality, the people who end the conversations in classrooms always seem to be the ones who preach open mindedness. These “progressives” hear an opposing opinion and employ what has now become a common tactic today, name calling. Oh, if he thinks that way he must be a racist,…

It is important that I build positive effective relationships with the children, young people and adults that I work with, to do this I need to be able to demonstrate and model effective communication skills in my dealings with others. I must always consider how I approach people and also how I respond to them. I will be able to communicate information to one another if I have positive relationships. Parents and other adults who come into the school are more likely to give beneficial support if communication is strong and effective – this, in turn, benefits pupils. It is also important for the children that I model effective communication skills. This means checking what I am saying and how I say it in times of stress or excitement, so that they can understand what my expectations are. If I ask a child / young person to behave in a particular way when communicating I must remember to behave in the same way being a good role model for the child / young person. Otherwise, they will find it harder to understand the boundaries of what is acceptable.…
