“There are approximately 176,000” (NCAA) student athletes currently playing sports in college. If you ask people whether College athletes should be paid, most would say yes, but most people don’t realize the factors that go into that decision. With that being said college athletes should not be paid because they receive more benefits than other people on campus by receiving free things like education, clothing/accessories, and the cost for the staff and for transportation. Not only that, but they also have to pay the coaches and everyone who contributes to the program. Overall there are many things that have to go into making sure programs stay up and running. Due to that, they should not be paid. In college sports there are many things that have to be taken into account when asking if a college athlete should be paid. One reason why that is, the university also gifts them …show more content…
with things like shoes, shirts and pants. That is a toll on the university itself, other college students have to pay for those things. That is just another perk they have leading them away from getting paid. One major expense to the school is clothing and accessories. That plays a big role because on each athletic team they have to have uniforms to be able to participate in the sport. Sometimes programs even have multiple alternate uniforms. For example the University of Oregon has a possibility of 512 uniform combinations (Oregon ducks have how many uniforms?) If the NCAA were to start paying these college athletes, there would be no money left to fund these expensive uniforms.
There are many reasons why college athletes should not be paid, but one people do not think about is the traveling expenses and also the staff pay.
When playing in a college sport, the team usually travels to another state to play. Taking that into account the university has to pay for flights because they can’t take busses everywhere, and even if they did they would have to pay a hefty amount of money. For example the University of Minnesota’s cost for travel last year costed 2.9 million dollars (charter flights for college) and that is not including maintenance and fuel. Now let’s take into consideration the staff pay, the staff has to be paid a reasonable amount to be able to provide for their families. The average major college program head coach makes 1.64 million a year (D1 coach earnings per year).Keep in mind that all these fees have to be paid by the university and partially by the NCAA. If the NCAA were to add college players to the conversation of getting paid it would put the university in great debt due to the many players that participate in
sports.
One major important perk that college athletes receive is a free education. Most regular students have to pay for books, room and board and classes. Athletes are already gifted with free education, and if they were to start getting paid it would only cause problems for the rest of the students at the campus. Through common thought processes, one can assume that they would lose interest in the classroom and feel as If it is not important. Not only that, they will be not taking advantage of the opportunity to get their diploma at no cost. It is all the college athletes dream to make it to the pros, but everyone won’t make it, and in that case the free education will help them still be successful in life. Every other student on campus has to worry about one major thing when they graduate, and that is student loans which take a long time to pay off. College athletes on the other hand have everything planned out for them; that is if they make it to the pros they will be making millions of dollars, and for the ones who don’t make, they still have a education and diploma without having to worry about student loans.
On the other hand there would be some benefits if they were to get paid. In the case of University Central Florida’s kicker Donald De La Haye; he was kicked off the team and stripped of his scholarship for making money off of YouTube and displaying his football and athletic abilities. If they were to start getting paid, that wouldn’t have been an incident and it would have been just another player getting some extra money. Another example is for the people who don’t proceed to go to the pros they would have money to support themselves if they have a family. If they didn’t make it to the league, they would at least be able to experience what it was like getting paid for playing a sport, it doesn’t have to be much, but enough to let them experience what it is like. Not only that, but these college games get televised just like the pros. It’s not like the University doesn’t get any profits from the game, they get money from ticket sales, merchandise, and other things like that. The college athletes don’t receive any cuts from the sales and because of that, one can see why some people think that college athletes should be paid.
