In this essay, Dave Leonhardt writes about the reasons why students dropout the school, focusing in poor and working class. He illustrates the experience of Andy Bleving of Chilhowie, Virginia. Some of the reasons are: the cost of tuition, economic problems, children follow the path of their parents, motivation, lack of academic preparation in high school.
Use clues provided in the context and in the actual writing to determine the following as specifically as possible:
(1) Who do you believe is the target audience for this essay? What makes you think so? Does the author do an adequate job of targeting this audience? Why or why not?
The target audiences are: adults with high education, college students, professors, college staff, and parents. He talks about a realistic problem in low class. One of the principal problem is the economic because poor students can’t afford the tuitions, therefore don’t receive a good education.
(2) How does the author’s personality as a writer come across in his writing? What’s his style like?
I think that he really knows the problems of the poor young students that can’t get a degree. He has a formal style and for his resume, he should be a very smart person. He came from Yale and he writes in New York Times.
(3) Why did the writer write this essay? Is he qualified to make the statements he has made? Why or why not?
For me, he wants to emphasis a tremendous problem of the American society. Poor people don’t have access to good education for many reasons and government don’t help those students.
