Amazon.com is a publicly traded worldwide online retail company founded by Jeff Bezos on July 5, 1995 in Seattle, Washington. Technological innovation drives the growth of Amazon.com to offer customers more types of products, more conveniently and at lower prices. Since 1995, Amazon has significantly expanded its product selection, international retail websites, and worldwide network of fulfillment and customer service centers. Today, Amazon retail websites offer everything from toys and video games to MP3 downloads and collectible items (amazon.com, 2014). Amazons business model is fairly simple; to sell various products and goods online at an affordable cost to consumers. Amazon has managed to not only achieve this business model but they have also managed to consistently expand and become the largest online retailer to date. To keep up with global demand, Amazon had to expand its products and services offered while continuing to forecast consumer’s needs. “In 2000, Amazon.com began to offer its best-of-breed e-commerce platform to other retailers and to individual sellers. Today, hundreds of thousands of world-class retail brands and individual sellers increase their sales and reach new customers by leveraging the power of the Amazon.com e-commerce platform. Partners work with Amazon Services to power their e-commerce offerings from end-to-end, including technology services, merchandising, customer service, and order fulfillment. Other branded merchants leverage Amazon.com as an incremental sales channel for their new merchandise. Over 2 million third-party sellers participate in Amazon where they offer new, used, and…

At the age of 22, I come to realize that strangely, many key aspects of my life relied on the implementation of business-related processes. Growing up, I witnessed the progress of my father’s entrepreneurial journey in the Sound System industry. He started off as a lecturer at the University of Indonesia (majoring in engineering). Little did I know that the experiences of a lecturer could someday develop into a multi-national company. I was lucky to witness and, indirectly, be a part of its growth. Having gotten involved at a very young age, my interest in the business world continues to evolve into an academic preference, indicated by my choice to take business major as my undergraduate study in the University of Pelita Harapan. Meanwhile, when I was in high school, I got involved into the entertainment industry by personally producing a solo album, in which I undertook the production, distribution, management, and marketing aspects of it. Starting to work at a relatively earlier age than most of my peers, gave me the advantage of real-life application of business theory. Without overlooking the family business, I somehow managed to juggle my university life as well as my career, strengthening my academic tendency towards business studies, culminating into my most recent project, managing a non-profit organization concerned with educational funding. These aspects contribute into creating the person I am now; one who is fully committed to continuing his business path by undertaking an MBA degree at Boston University.…

It is originally as an online bookseller and slowly climbed its way to becoming a multibillion dollar company. Its climb to the top was not an accident or a result of good market timing, although this did help, it was its internal operations that played a major role. “Unlike such online rivals as, say, Barnes and nobles (bn.com) or walmart.com, Amazon has no roof over its head—no bricks-and-mortar presence to anchor its online presence” that being said, Amazon had to compensate for this difference. Amazon as wells as its investors discovered that its profits were depleted by soaring costs and expenses.…
Three major products and/or services that are offered by Amazon that will be the scope of this paper are digital content, retail goods and computing services. Amazon has several competitors in all three products/service lines. In the case of digital content a few major competitors to Amazon include Apple, Google, Barnes & Noble, Hulu, Netflix, brick-and-mortar stores, and direct publishing by content owners. Advantage Amazon has over its competitors in the area of digital content is the idea of "one-stop shopping "for media consumption. Out of all the competitors and so offers the broadest range of different media types, the closest competitor being Apple. Amazon 's music catalog isn 't as strong as apples but is made up for by the fact that it has a very strong e-book repository. Competition faced by Amazon in the retail goods market include eBay and various other brand-name online retailers, and third-party seller to buyer aggregation services. Amazon strength in the online retail goods is brand recognition on par with eBay, and strong search functionality across Amazon affiliates with strong integration of payment processing. The last faucet of competition involves Amazon 's Web services computing services which is similar to the services offered via rack space, Microsoft Windows Azure, and Joyent. Amazon 's strength this sector relies on brand recognition, very large companies using their Web services, and the perceived reliability of their cloud services infrastructure.…
Apart from growth Amazon is more known for another one of its endeavors, innovation. Bezos has said that “Innovation is part of the Amazon DNA and over the past 15 years we have been constantly adding and refining technology that enhances and improves the experience of all our customers” (Curtis, 2013, para. 3). For undeniable proof that Amazon is a world class leader in innovation, a brief excerpt from the list of innovations includes things like 1-click, where all buyer relevant information is stored allowing for simple 1-click purchases. As well as the kindle, an e-reader and tablet directly competing against Apple’s IPad (Curtis, 2013). Amazon is not afraid to venture into new territory, with things like AmazonFresh dealing directly with consumer grocery purchases, a far cry from the humble beginnings as an online book retailer.…
The Amazon company is really different with other companies because it is the only one to make an incredible turnover but no real profits since the beginning. Its strategy is to become the leader in books sector and in general on the e- commerce by proposing to the customer more choices than every other competitors. It took less than a year to Amazon to propose over one million different books. The entire company is organized around a big chess game. Every asset is a piece on the board thanks to the location of the different facilities in the world.…
