College Rules Book Report
After searching through the overwhelmingly large option of books, I settled on College Rules by Sherrie Nist and Jodi Holscheh. The section of the book I focused on was basically all about how to make the best of your college experience. They kept pointing out the importance of making sure you are happy. It explains how having a balanced life and multiple interests can help keep you interested in school. It later goes into talking about the benefits of extracurricular activities(Nist and Holschuh 68-69). These activities can make you more presentable to future employees which can never hurt. It is always good to be able to add a little more to your resume. While I was looking for this book, there was another book that caught my eye. It was …show more content…
This way, I won't be getting the viewpoints from people who have not had first hand experience with a fraternity. An old friend of mine helped me gain the connection with Chris Goodman. This will be his second year being a part of Kappa Sigma. Once we figured out the best way for us to do an interview, we decides to FaceTime. At first, the interview was a little awkward. I’ve never met him before, he was my age, and he was very attractive. After some small talk, I jumped right into asking him some questions. I figured asking him about alcohol would be a good ice breaker. He gave a chuckle and then told me, “Alcohol is only allowed at special events that involve 21 year olds. There are parties that occur at frat houses but it depends on who lives there.” That raised another question in my mind about their living situations. Because fraternities are not allowed to be located on campus, the members are either allowed to live in the dorms or find their own living arrangements. Chris said, “most landlords will only allow four to five guys to live together. That makes it nearly impossible to have all the members live together under one roof.” Through conversation, he mentioned that last year they didn't have and official frat house. He said there were multiple guys in the dorms and a few lived together in houses neighboring the campus. This year they found a house that the …show more content…
School was the theme that I stayed in touch with. From campus assaults to media on schooling, they all could be related back to education. Originally, I started with a negative topic and slowly moved towards ending on a positive note. The school systems that we are familiar with today can be difficult. The important decisions that are made are often made by people who have not stepped foot in a classroom. If the decision makers spent more time getting to know the place they are in charge of, I think a lot of the flaws in our school system could be solved. Many different things factor into every aspect of education. With that being said, it is almost impossible to make things flawless and for everyone to be happy. Everyone has a different opinion and no matter what, not everyone will agree with everything that is said and

Yes, college is a very important academic institution in one’s life, mainly helping to determine a career that one will pursue for a long time after school. But there is so much more to college than the schoolwork. In fact this is a topic that I have spoken about recently, at a showcase at my high school over break. My old computer science teacher hosted a showcase for his students about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers featuring students in college or that have graduated from college, speaking about how college works along with classes and the STEM majors and careers. The main point I would try to convey to the students is to get involved with something right away, because if all you focus on is your schoolwork you are going to have a miserable time at college. However, using the hidden intellectualism of being social, you can make friends, join clubs, compete in sports, and things like that which can not only make you happier, but even help your academic studies. The art of being social can be quite difficult, and it truly is a form of hidden intellectualism, and you can clearly see who is good and who is not with it. And ironically enough in most scenarios the most book smart students are those who struggle most in social settings. Not that that holds true in all scenarios, but it is quite common. That right there…

Alexandra Robbins and Georgianna L. Martin argue in their The Wall Street Journal 2015 article, “Should Colleges Get Rid of Fraternities?” if colleges should remove fraternities. Especially, Robbins believes that fraternities harm college community and involve in risky situations. However, Martin thinks that fraternities are an important part of university life. Robbins states that some fraternity members show some serious misbehaviors and danger their and other students’ lives by supplying alcohol, committing rape in order to prove fraternities are dangerous and should be removed. On the other hand, Martin reveals that they are academically successful and respectful community and they offer an experience in a unique community based on social…
