My Journey to College Success: Achieving personal Responsibility
“Indeed, it is the institution’s role to create an environment to help students move toward academic success and achievement, but ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to possess a growth mind set” (Hazard, L, 2013, p. 4). College success can only be possible by achieving personal responsibility. I am the only one responsible for my successes and failures. Blaming others will only waste my time and that means I would be procrastinating. Maybe it is not something easy to accept but the sooner I realize it, the sooner I will achieve my goal to succeed in college. I am the only one in control of my life, and I will not leave for tomorrow what I can do today. I have the gift as everyone else, of free will to make conscious choices that carries tremendous responsibility, and every choice I make can either benefit or harm me. I will need to increase self-motivation because no one else can help me out on completing a task. However, asking for help and advice can give me some options on which way to go or where to start. Every time I start taking responsibility for everything, I begin managing my time properly by not procrastinating. “Procrastination has been defined as the purposeful postponement or delaying of the performance of a task or the making of a decision” (Owens, Bowman, Dill, 2008, p. 1). Indeed, procrastination is a human’s worst enemy, everyone has problems with procrastination even myself, but I will not let it get on my way. A way to manage my time properly can be by creating tasks, creating a calendar, and creating a plan. Once I take control of my time, my choices, and decisions, everything will start falling in place. I will start taking charge of my own life, and it will lead me to my journey of college success. I will start meeting deadlines for my assignments and start arriving on time to my classes. Another helpful tip is, focusing my energy in studying instead of wasting it in non-academic activities. I should also have goals in my life to keep me motivated but I should set realistic goals easy to achieve. I can practice my reading skills to, as I know that in college I will be spending most of my time reading. Understanding how possessing personal responsibility can help me with college success, will make my goals easier to accomplish.
