Colonizing Mars
Colonizing Mars

Many scientists believe that humanity has a date with extinction if we do not try to expand our horizons. It took about 4.5 billion years for mankind to evolve into the intelligent beings we see when we look in the mirror. For this very reason scientists believe that mankind would make a grave mistake if we do not put forth a dedicated effort in saving humanity. There are many concerns that are facing mankind in attempting to colonize space and other planets. However the dangers of not colonizing space and other planets outweigh the attempt remarkably. Mankind has proven time and time again that if we come together as one, we can accomplish anything. Some scientists believe that humanity can become extinct if an asteroid was to slam into our planet. Research has proven that a catastrophe of that magnitude has already occurred. Many scientists theorize that this could have been the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. Other researchers like Stephen Hawking, believe that humanity will destroy itself. Stephen Hawking is a professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and he is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein. He says, “In the last two hundred years, population growth has become exponential, that is, the population grows by the same percentage each year” (Hawking ,158). The current rate in which the human population grows each year is about 1.9 percent. That might not sound like much, but at that rate the human population doubles every 40 years. According to Professor Hawking, “By the year 2600 the world’s population will be standing shoulder to shoulder, and electricity use will make the Earth glow red-hot” (Hawking ,158). Professor Hawking believes that the only way that humanity can co-exist in harmony is by colonizing space and even other planets. Out of all the Planets in our Solar System, scientists believe that Mars is the best candidate for

Mars as a planet tries to prove itself to be hostile to humanity with thin oxygen yet fails due to the tenacity of the colonists. “No!...I'll be all right. I've got to stay here!” the words of Benjamin Driscoll, the Johnny Appleseed of Mars. The man who refused to admit defeat and return to Earth even after discovering that the Martian atmoshpere was detrimental to his health.1 Through his own tenacity and unwillingness to give up the man managed to seed Mars with the…

But how could we possibly reach them, modern day space travel doesn’t even reach the moon, and we still don’t know how long humans can live in zero-gravity without permanent, adverse effects. And how might humans survive under a different sun with lashes of uncontained radiation that are common on Mars. This research will analyze the reasoning and possibilities of humanity colonizing Mars as well as the changes society might undergo having a foothold in two different planets in order to answer the questions, why do humans feel the need to colonize Mars? And how might its colonization affect our…

I personally believe that we are already preserving when it comes to wondering if we are going to become extincted. We as human have a hard time not reproducing, this meaning most humans that become married usually begin having children within the first 5 years of their marriage if they haven’t married and already have children. This being said we may not leave an carbon copy of ourselves but we are leaving genies that we carry as well as tradition and legacies that we uphold. We has humans don’t understand the importance of preserving things, we are so focused on who has more than the other or who is worth more than the other that it never dawns on us that one day humans can be a thing of the past. Looking at the most important things of life now with is preserving and growth of things we are currently involved in. Keeping the world a better place to live in so that we are in a good environment to continue preserving the things we need.…

In 1961, the world was changed forever, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin entered the spacecraft Vostok 1 and traveled into space. Following him in the same year, was the American astronaut Alan Shepard in Freedom 7. Then in 1969 the crew of the Apollo 11 mission landed on the Moon. This space race in the 1960s helped to light the fire of man’s interest in outer space and has lead mankind to wonder if we could live away from the comfort and safety of planet Earth. Many scientist and explorers have wondered if it would be possible to colonize the Moon or Mars for the purpose of research, resources, and hopefully a secondary home for the human race. However, many people have also doubted the idea of leaving the safety of planet Earth to explore other options of habitable places. Many argue that space exploration is dangerous and some critics argue that it is using too much money that could…

Establishing a colony on mars is not an option, it is a necessity. Clearly, the next logical step for our race is to expand out into the stars, into the unknown. The Human race has to put more effort and resources into space exploration. It is in our deep underlying nature to explore, we are a curious animal that wants to discover all it can, we just need the tools to do so. We need the next Christopher Columbus, we need someone with the drive and will to explore the unknown.…

I read about the Apollo missions and the obsession with space exploration. Space exploration has been a human fascination since the early 1960s, probably even before then actually. The first person to be put into space was in was Yuir Gagarin at the age of 27, by the Russian Soviet Union. However, it wasn't until 1969 that NASA successfully landed the first man (men) on the moon, with the Apollo 11space mission. Interestingly enough, NASA hasn't attempted go revisit the moon since. Many speculate humans never made it to the moon, and that all of the "evidence" was entirely fabricated.Regardless, ever since then, humans have been fascinated with the idea of trying to reach other planets and possibly inhabit them. Many attempts to find life on…

This sounds like it could be true because there isn’t much of a difference between Mars and Earth. The big problems with colonizing Mars is oxygen and liquid water. Having liquid water on Mars is possible though because features on the surface suggest that water once flowed. Even though there is no sign of liquid water on Mars astronomers have found water is frozen in the soil, and in sheets of ice in the polar ice caps (Sharp). A way to get oxygen on Mars would be to grow plants. Mars is ninety-five percent carbon dioxide (Sharp) which plants need to survive and grow. In return, plants would give off oxygen for us to breath. Even if we did this the gravity on Mars would not be able to keep oxygen in its…

As a geologist in the Mars One Project, I needed to do a lot of research on Mars, its atmosphere, its conditions, its soil, etc. My team’s mission is to find a way to provide nutrition to the astronauts. The contributions I have made with settling on Mars is, first of all, had to figure out the temperature of Mars. With the information we researched, we figured out what temperature we need to have in the greenhouse, and what temperature we needed for the plants to grow in. What I did separately, was that I researched what the soil on Mars is composed of. I searched this up because we needed to grow food on Mars to provide a good nutrition for the astronauts. The soil is composed of finely broken up basaltic rock fragments and are highly…
