Color Guard Reflection
I am extremely sad that color guard season is over. Even though there is a winter guard, I’m not doing it this year. On Tuesday, the entire band went to all the elementary schools and also the middle school to end the season. I have never been to Forest Hunt, and I was surprised how small the gym was. I really enjoyed going back to Harris and seeing my favorite teacher, Mr. Wallace. I’m going to miss all the seniors who graduate this year. Next year will not be the

Color guard is the visual and the non musical part of a marching band show. Color guard consists of spinning either a three and one half pound rifle or a five and one half foot flag outside, striving for perfection and consistency. The season starts in the summer and is continued through the fall (football season). The enduring practices and heat makes it difficult for some people to give it their all, but at the same time it also helps you to push yourself. If someone does not wish to commit or be the best that they can, they will not survive in marching band color guard. During marching competition the color guard performs the show that they performed during the season and the guard gets judged based on their performance with the band. Also before and after the marching band puts on their show the guard sits in the stands with the band and dances with the band as they play different songs.…

When the fair came around in September, the winning cover was better than what I could do. I was upset because I thought maybe I would never be good enough to win anything, especially not something…

In high school, I was involved multiple clubs and groups varying from athletic, academic, and artistic. Overall, the school’s marching band color guard had the largest influence on my personal growth in during the time. At my school, all color guard members are required to complete one season of marching and playing instruments with the band before being allowed to join the guard. Therefore, it wasn’t until my sophomore year that I auditioned and was accepted into the color guard which I participated in for the rest of my high school career. Because there was no recognized team captain, all the girls were expected to step up as leaders not only for themselves but for everyone else as well.…

A popular quote used by many guard members is that “Color Guard is god's gift to the marching band”. No matter your religion, the message of the quote is clear. Many guard members feel that the marching band needs them. Most band members would disagree with this, however, the color guard is superior to the band because the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band.…

"For years it was my embarrassing task to sit in on the meetings of whites and blacks, to serve one ridiculous but necessary function: I knew, and every black man there knew, that I, as a man now white once again, could say the things that needed saying but would be rejected if black men said them...for the simple reason that white men could not tolerate hearing them from a black person's mouth" (Griffin 177).…

They help make the band look even more beautiful and are also known as the auxiliary. But it’s really more than that. Color guard is a true test to physical strength and ability and it’s where I spend every waking hour trying to improve each toss, turn, and count. Color guard is where two, almost three dozen girls spend most of our free time practicing something that will not get us a job. It won’t pay us in anything but joy. And as cliché as that sounds, it’s true. Color guard will probably never give us more than thousands upon millions of life lessons. Yet, we all still do it because we love it. Color guard is striving to be the best you can be. It’s socializing with some people you can’t stand half the time because somehow they became like family and mean more than the world to you. It’s sacrificing so many Fridays to do what you love, and it’s sacrificing your face and hair to tons of hairspray and glitter so you can stand out on a field and make the band look just as beautiful as they…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. I held in my excitement and accepted his offer.…

I’ve given my all in everything I do and demonstrated while participating in other extracurricular activities. I’m a strong speaker and I always do what I am told. I believe I have the qualifications needed to be captain for the 2010-2011 color guard season(s). I know I’ve had the experience in leading a group like this and not only have I led the guard out into a performance I’ve also taken charge in most of my extracurricular activities I’ve stage managed performances, helped in properties, and ran sound for my previous theater arts/choir performances so taking charge really won’t be something new me. I’ve learned from my previous experience, which have helped me surpass my challenges in now a day situations.…

Even though it sounds pretty corny and cliche, the team next year is going to be nowhere near the same without you. You’re always so supportive of each and every single girl on the team and I know that everybody can trust you the most with any problem that they have, whether it be on the cheer time or their personal life. You’re always there for the team, helping out in any way possible, whether it be fixing a whole pyramid with counts five minutes before halftime or by being a representative for our team at every orientation or school event. You represent exactly what a cheerleader should be, always showing school spirit, always trying to encourage the team to be friends with one another, showing enthusiasm during sidelines and spiriting instead of just waiting for halftime, and always expressing a kind charisma no matter what is going on in your personal life.…
