Ann Charters says in appendix III of "The Story and Its Writer, in all successful fiction characters come alive as individuals. They must materialize on the page through the accumulation of details about their appearance, actions, and responses, as seen, heard, and felt physical realities." Hemingway in "Hills Like White Elephants." tells us little about the physical appearance of the characters, Jig and her boyfriend. We do not even know the first name of the man. The lack of physical details about the characters makes them less than flesh and blood to most readers. However Hemingway is able to reveal the figure of his characters through their thinking. For instance, Jig boyfriend says "But I don't want anybody but you. I don't want any one else" This shows how Jig's boyfriend like most young guys is not ready to keep up with the responsibilities of pregnancy. Unlike Hemmingway, Banks gives the physical details about his characters. He describes the Black man as tall, slender and muscular. He also describes the white woman as a girl, "actually, twenty or maybe twenty-one". Like Hemmingway, Banks's…

The couple in “Hills Life White Elephants” is a prime example of a shallow relationship that is seemingly empty and meaningless. It is a relationship between an American man and a woman called Jig that is devoid of responsibility. This relationship is very similar to the past marriage of Charlie Wales, the protagonist in “Babylon Revisited.” Charlie used to be married to a woman named Helen during the stock market boom of the 1920s before she tragically died of a heart condition. Charlie and Helen were a very rich couple due to Charlie’s skilful playing of the stock market. The two led a lifestyle of dissipation mostly characterized by binge drinking. They were rich Americans in Europe…

The American sees it as a problem that can easily be solved as where Jig sees it as a beautiful experience. Jig looks to the hills and says; "they look like white elephants" by saying "white elephants" she is referring to her pregnancy. Jig continues to say, "They're lovely hills" meaning having a baby will be lovely. The American tires to minimize the beauty of it and explains, "It's really not anything. They just let the air in." Even though the conflict is the man and Jigs issue with keeping the baby or getting an abortion, it is ultimately up to Jig to decide. Towards the end of the story when the man gets the final say about the abortion, the girl says, "I'll scream." Meaning she has made up her mind and she does not want to hear anymore from the…

In “Hills like White Elephants” it shows the struggle one couple faced with deciding whether or not they wanted to tackle parenthood. The couple, “the American” and “the girl” both are unsure of their fate. The American just wants to walk away and the girl just wants to make him happy, “American male protagonist dominates the meeker, weaker-sexed jig of her femaleness” (Busch, Frederick; 234). There are lots of people that the man still has the bigger role in the relationship, but in those relationships comes a lot of animosity to the companion later. In one…

Starting something and following through and finishing is very hard and tedious, but if you are committed then any task is possible. Watching what Joe has accomplished, good or bad, shows the commitment that one needs to finish any task that comes their way.…

The most remarkable aspect of the short story "Hills Like White Elephants," written by Ernest Hemingway, is it 's rich use of symbolism. The story is rather unique in that it does not have a complete plot line with an introduction leading to an expanded story. Neither are we left with a developed conclusion to the story. The main thrust centers around two characters having a quarrel about certain issues they disagree on. However, Hemingway leaves his reader in the dark as to the background of the two characters, even to the point of omitting specifics regarding the argument itself. Even though Hemingway provides very little detail regarding the characters ' respective pasts or even the current situation, the use of symbolism utilized throughout the conversation allows us to understand something of them through indirect implications rather than specific details. Hemmingway 's clever use of symbolism and allusion allows the reader to understand (again, without making direct reference to specifics) that they are arguing over whether or not Jig (the main female character) should have an abortion. By analyzing the couple 's dialogue we can deduce that the couple is in fact playing mind games, and manipulating each other 's points of views on abortion regarding their unborn child.…

In the beginning of Hills Like White Elephants, Jig is as naïve as the woman from The Yellow Wallpaper. Jig also tries to believe everything the man says. She held onto a bit of hoping when she asked, “And if I do it you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me?” This shows that Jig is willing to do almost anything and go against what she believes to make things normal with the American again, but in this case the only…
