Communication Accommodation Theory Analysis

Reading about Communication Accommodation Theory, I was capable of applying every conflict or conversation I have participated in with all my relationships. I have experienced all of the different accommodations in most conversations I have had like talking about an the way our coach was treating us with a teammate, discussing with a colleague about meat consumption, and the issues upon Women’s Rights. These sort of conversations contained different tones, but I evaluated and adapted to fit the correct manner. This theory discusses that during a conversation, the interactors are adapting to the setting to assimilate. It can happen either verbally or non-verbal or even in the matter of appearance. This sort of adapting is described to be called divergence. The meaning of this is one understands the point being addressed, but will still inform the opposing side their own intake of the opposer. As explained in an article called “Communication Accommodation Theory”,” And the divergent exhibits an opposite characteristic as it emphasises the difference among the close relations with each other” (2010). So differences is common within divergence. One will understand and still be able to communicate both sides, but still include their own position which may be opposite. For an example of this act, I recall a topic me and my friend had about animal products. Her position was to go against animal testing and protect animal rights, this position is also influenced by her background being supportive to her religious practice and a vegetarian. I responded appropriately informing her that animal abuse is inhuman, but in my opinion consuming meat is morally right to me because my family has always eaten meat.
