Assignment 1 Task 2
Questions to discuss on Argyle’s Communication Cycle
1) ‘Effective communication is a two-way process’. What does this mean?
‘Two-way’ process refers to the fact that both parties are involved in the transmission of information. ‘Two-way’ process involves feedback from the receiver to the sender. This allows the sender to know the message was received accurately by the receiver. Effective communication involves the process of checking understanding that is involved in reflective or active listening.
2) Why do we have to ‘constantly adapt our behaviour’ when communicating?
(Driving car analogy)
We communicate with people every day, but sometimes we do not adjust our communication style to the audience or situation. This can lead to confusion, hurt feelings, or misunderstandings
3) Name and explain the six stages of the Communication Cycle.
The first one is an idea occurs, this is when a person has an idea that they want to communicate to someone else. The next is message coded this is when the person figures out how they want to say it. Message sent is when the individual speaks, writes or transmits the message by other means. Message received is when the other person gets the message. Message decoded is when the person has to figure out what the other person has said or written. The final stage is message understood; this is when the person understands the other person’s idea. However, this may not always happen the first time.
4) What if your message is not understood:
a) How do you tell?
The listener is confused about what the speaker said, and is likely to give a response that does not address what the speaker was talking about. Facial expressions may also be used by the listener to convey to the speaker that the message was not understood.
b) What do you do?
Repeating the message but more clearly this time, for example by using clear language and making sure not to make the meaning of the
