Communication: Employment and Alan

From the interaction does it seem to you that Alan is actively listening? Why or why not?

I think Alan is not actively listening because of his body language and facial expressions during the entirety of the interview. Alan doesn’t seem overall interested in the interview and doesn’t appear to be actively listening.

Describe how Alan’s opening comments in the video (his view of his job) affect his approach to the performance reviews. Does Alan’s view of his job foster a negative or positive work atmosphere with his employees? Explain.

Alan’s opening comment in the performance review shows that he is not really interested in the interview because of his tone. I think that Alan’s view of his job as clouded his judgment and his performance on the job. His dissatisfaction with his job has fostered a negative work atmosphere with his employees. I also think that Alan has start to review has destroyed his employee’s moral, welfare and motivation on job because of the instant negativity he started with.

Identify specific comments by Alan that show he is either effectively listening to his employees or that he is not.

The comment that Alan used that showed that he wasn’t actively listening is when he said that “I don’t want to lose you go but you have got work more quickly.” This comment showed that Alan wasn’t effectively listening to his employees. This comment shows that Alan was selectively listening and he was on listening for what he wanted to hear. Even during his comment Alan never really made eye contact with his employee, which shows that he was not interested in what his employee had to say about her job performance.

Using the effective listening guidelines in the text, make three suggestions that would allow Alan to fulfill his responsibility to provide employees with critical feedback about performance and to establish a supportive climate.

Based on the listening guidelines discussed

    1) From the interaction does it seem to you that Alan is actively listening? Why or Why not? It does not seem that Alan is actively listening at all. He may be hearing the voices of his employees but he is not listening to them as they answer the questions that he has asked. He is also not mindful in his interactions with his employees. He is scribbling notes, shaking his head, constantly frowning and does not give the person he is talking to direct eye contact when speaking to them. Finally, Alan is not responding appropriately to what his employees are saying. He is not showing through his words or actions that he cares nor is interested in engaging them in further conversation.…

He defines listening as making meaning from sound. Julian says we use a lot of techniques to do it: firstly, when it’s noisy, we react at some sounds and words, especially our names – that’s how we recognize patterns. Secondly, we use differencing: if some sound remains for more than a couple of minutes we’re getting used to it. And finally, there’s a whole range of filters like culture, language, values, beliefs, attitude, expectations, intentions that are creating our reality by telling us what we’re paying attention to at this moment.…
