In discussing public health issue in my community, we have to first of all define community health.
First, what is a community? According to Dr Chavez, a community is thought to be a very homogeneous group of people that have something in common. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007). Things they have in common may be, the same language, the same ethnicity or race, people living in the same neighborhood, people having something that make them similar. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007).
The World Health Organization (WHO) define community as a group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who share a common culture, values and norms. (Cohen, L. (2012). Communities gather together to take action on something that they know and feel that is right, they mobilize for campaign for something that they want. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007). Community sustains life and ensures human survival. (Cohen, L. (2012).
Secondly, what is health? According to Dr Chavez, health is not just the absence of disease, it is having the right to those things that make one well, for instance, clean water, good housing and a break from job. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007).
Furthermore, according to the healthy community public health movement, a healthy community is defined as one that is continually creating and improving those community resources which enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and achieving their maximum potential. (Cohen, L. (2012).
