What I learned by completing 20 hours of community service?

People get involved in community service for a variety of reasons. For example, there are many who suffer from starvation and need someone willing to make sure they receive the necessary nutritional values. There are elderly people in this world who are looking for someone to talk to, and someone to comfort them. There are many people in the world seeking a friend and others who are searching for guidance or a mentor in life. Many people choose to give back to their community in different ways. Some choose a public service; others join organizations or even create a club or organization geared towards a specific task. This semester I have decided to volunteer my services by giving my time.
Community service was an enjoyable experience this semester. I spent time with the Newman community, participating in numerous activities that fostered the notion of forming communities and establishing positive relationships with people we may not normally initiate contact with on our own. Through this experience I’ve learned about different cultures, and the importance of not basing one’s experience on stereotypes. We are unique individuals and what makes us essential who we are, are those unique qualities not our racial or ethnic backgrounds. I have also learned that the world isn’t centered on my needs or my life alone. There are a lot of people in worse situations and that I should be grateful for the opportunities I’m offered in life. Not only should we appreciate our circumstances, but we should also look for ways to help those in need. By doing this we not only feel good about ourselves, but we help others form a more positive outlook on life.
